🚨🐾 September is Disaster Preparedness Month and that means planning ahead for your pets, too!

Just like us, our furry family members need to be ready in case of an emergency. A little preparation now can make all the difference later.

✅ Create a pet emergency kit (food, water, meds, leashes, carriers, first aid supplies)
✅ Make sure your pet’s ID tags & microchip info are up to date
✅ Have copies of vet records & recent photos of your pet
✅ Plan safe places to go (pet-friendly shelters, hotels, or friends/family)

Your pets depend on you in a crisis, let’s keep them safe. 💙🐶🐱

🐾 Take your Cat to the Vet Day? No Problem! Here’s How to Take Your Cat Safely 🐱🩺

Taking your cat to the vet doesn’t have to be stressful, for you or your kitty! 😺
Here are some tips to help keep things calm, safe, and (almost) purr-fect:

✨ Use a sturdy, comfy carrier (we love when cat carriers have multiple openings!)
✨ Let your cat explore the carrier at home for several days or weeks in advance of their appointment
✨ Try calming sprays or treats (Feliway works great!)
✨ Drive smooth & keep things quiet
✨ Cover the carrier with a towel for a cozy vibe
✨ Ask us about cat-friendly waiting options!

And remember, your calm helps them stay calm!
We’re always here to make vet visits as stress-free as possible 💙

It's that time of year, please be cautious and aware of any stagnant waters in our area and keep your pups away from them!

Treasure Valley dog owners, please take note. More health advisories issued for toxic algae blooms:

Canyon: Lake Lowell
Valley: Lake Cascade (Van Wyck)
Washington: Crane Creek Reservoir
Washington: Brownlee Reservoir
Owyhee: Bruneau Arm (Cottonwood Creek)
Lewis: Wi******er Lake
Bonner: Chuck Slough
Kootenai: Hayden Lake (Upper End)
Latah: Hordemann's Pond

Idaho Department of Environmental Quality is testing additional bodies of water. Some may fall below the human health advisory levels, but dogs can become gravely ill or die at much lower toxin concentrations. Always check the DEQ site for human advisories, but never assume those levels are safe for pets.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR: Warning Signs of Toxic Algae: If you see pea-green slime, bright green “moss,” or neon-colored circles on the surface of a lake or pond, assume it is toxic algae. Wind may push blooms toward the shoreline, but that does not mean the rest of the water is safe to swim in or drink. These blooms can be deadly to pets.

After outings with your pet, be sure to check them for foxtails, a grass seed pod that resembles a fox’s tail. Brush your pet, checking between their toes, as well as in their ears, armpits, and groin areas.

Foxtails (also known as cheatgrass) usually enter a pet's body through the nose, mouth, ears, and eyes. Because of the fish-hook-like shape of the barbs, they only move in one direction—inward. If not removed, they can migrate into a pet's tissues and can potentially cause abscesses and widespread infections.

Foxtails are a foreign body that need to be removed from your pet. If they are at the surface, you can try to remove them with tweezers, but be sure to get the entire seed pod. If you don't get the entire seed pod out, or if you think the foxtail has already migrated inward, please see your veterinarian, especially if your pet is shaking its head or persistently sneezing.

What to watch for:
* If a foxtail has entered through the nose and/or throat, the animal may exhibit persistent sneezing, snorting, nasal discharge, shaking of the head, pawing at the head, head tilting, or gagging.
* If it has entered through the paw, the animal may limp on the affected limb. Excessive licking of a specific area may also indicate the presence of a foxtail.
* If a foxtail has entered the eye area, uncontrolled blinking and swelling may be observed.
