🕷️ TICK SEASON IS EXPLODING EARLY THIS YEAR 😬

If it feels like ticks are suddenly EVERYWHERE… you’re not imagining it. Thanks to our warmer winter, we are already seeing ticks much earlier — and in much larger numbers — than usual.

We’re finding them after:
• backyard playtime
• walks around the neighborhood
• camping trips
• canal banks & trails
• fence lines
• even quick potty breaks outside

And the scary part? Some pets are coming in covered in tiny “baby” ticks that are easy to miss until there are A LOT of them. 👀

Ticks aren’t just gross hitchhikers. They can spread disease, cause skin infections and irritation, and create serious problems for both pets AND people.

A few quick reminders:
✔️ Keep pets on consistent flea/tick prevention
✔️ Check ears, necks, armpits, toes, and under collars after outdoor time
✔️ Brush coats regularly, especially thick or long-haired pets
✔️ Keep grass and weeds trimmed around the home
✔️ Remove ticks carefully and completely if found

Signs to watch for:
⚠️ excessive scratching
⚠️ scabs or irritated skin
⚠️ lethargy
⚠️ pale gums
⚠️ fever
⚠️ sudden discomfort after being outdoors

This year’s tick population is no joke.

Friendly reminder:
✨ The outdoors are beautiful right now.
🕷️ The ticks agree.

🌾 Cheatgrass season is here EARLY this year… and we are already seeing pets coming in with issues from it. 🐾😬

Thanks to our warmer winter, everything is blooming sooner than expected — and cheatgrass is EVERYWHERE right now. We’re finding it in backyards, fence lines, canal banks, campsites, walking trails, and even matted into coats.

We recently even had a kitty come in after vomiting up cheatgrass. 👀

For dogs AND cats, these sharp little grass awns can become embedded in:
• ears
• paws & between toes
• eyes
• skin folds/armpits
• coats and mats
• noses and mouths

The tricky part? Cheatgrass is barbed, meaning once it attaches, it tends to keep working its way deeper instead of falling back out.

We are seeing pets pick it up after camping trips, backyard playtime, walks, and even just lounging outside.

A few simple prevention tips:
✔️ Brush pets regularly, especially long-haired pets
✔️ Check paws, ears, armpits, and coats after outdoor time
✔️ Keep grass and weeds trimmed around the home
✔️ Remove mats/tangles where cheatgrass likes to hide
✔️ Watch for sudden sneezing, licking, limping, swelling, vomiting, or head shaking

The sooner cheatgrass is found, the easier (and less painful) it usually is to remove.

Friendly reminder:
✨ “Touch grass” season for humans.
⚠️ “Avoid the spicy grass” season for pets.

( picture shown below is sweet little miss Brynlee, she came in for her last round of puppy vaccines when her mom had mentioned that she had been having some ear irritation. The irritation and pain had cleared but still wanted us to take a peek at the ears just to be on the safe side and sure enough we found a piece of cheatgrass hiding deep in her canal. We were able to remove it and she is on her way to a quick recovery.)

“My dog doesn’t need heartworm prevention… they don’t go outside."
We hear this all the time 👀

Here’s the reality—heartworm disease is here in Idaho, and we’re seeing it more and more.
We actually treat heartworm-positive dogs in our clinic regularly, and most of those pets are transplants from other states—rescues or families relocating.

But here’s where it matters for you 👇
Heartworm isn’t spread directly from dog to dog…
👉 it’s transmitted by mosquitoes.
So if an infected dog is in your neighborhood—even next door—and a mosquito bites them, then bites your dog… ➡️ your dog is now at risk!

Which means:
your “just goes out to potty” dog
your “hangs out on the porch” dog
your “mostly indoor” dog
…are all still susceptible.

It only takes one bite 🦟

🫀 What heartworm actually does:
Heartworms live in the heart and lungs, where they grow and multiply.
Over time, this can lead to:
coughing
exercise intolerance
fatigue
weight loss
and in severe cases… heart failure
And the hard part?

👉 Early on, many dogs show little to no symptoms, which is why prevention matters so much!

🐜 And while we’re at it—spring = parasite season:
As the weather warms up, everything starts waking up… and unfortunately, that includes parasites 👀

Here’s what we start seeing more of this time of year:
🐜 Fleas
Not just an “itchy problem.”
Fleas can quickly turn into full-blown infestations in your home, cause skin infections, and even transmit tapeworms.
🕷️ Ticks
Picked up on walks, in yards, or even just brushing past vegetation.
Ticks can carry and transmit serious diseases, and many go unnoticed until they’ve already been attached.
🦠 Intestinal parasites
These are more common than people think—especially in spring.

Pets can pick them up from:
soil
standing water
other animals
even your own backyard
And some of these parasites can be transmitted to people, especially kids.

⚠️ The big misconception:
A lot of people think: “My dog doesn’t go anywhere, so they’re fine.”
But in reality:
You don’t need a hike or a camping trip
You don’t need visible fleas or ticks
You don’t need your pet to roam

👉 Exposure can happen in your yard, on a quick potty break, or from the environment around your home.
💊 Why prevention matters:
Preventatives don’t just make life easier—they:
✔ stop problems before they start
✔ protect your pet’s comfort and health
✔ help avoid bigger (and more expensive) issues down the road

✨️ If you’re not sure what your pet should be on, we’re happy to help you find the right protection for your pet and your lifestyle.

🐣 Before the Easter Bunny arrives… let’s talk pet safety.
Easter baskets, candy, and spring flowers are fun for the family — but several holiday favorites can be dangerous for our furry friends.
Here are a few common Easter hazards we see in veterinary clinics every year:
🍫 Chocolate
Chocolate contains theobromine, which dogs cannot process well. Dark and baking chocolate are especially dangerous and can cause vomiting, rapid heart rate, tremors, and seizures.
🌸 Easter Lilies (EXTREMELY toxic to cats)
All parts of the plant — petals, leaves, pollen, and even the water in the vase — can cause kidney failure in cats, even with small exposure.
🎀 Plastic Easter Basket Grass
Those colorful strands may look harmless, but they can cause intestinal blockages if swallowed.
🍬 Sugar-Free Candy (Xylitol)
Some candies and gum contain xylitol, which can cause dangerous drops in blood sugar and liver failure in dogs.
🥚 Plastic Eggs & Small Toys
Curious pets often chew or swallow these items, leading to choking hazards or intestinal obstructions.
🐾 Our best tip:
Keep Easter baskets, candy, decorations, and plants well out of paw’s reach.
If you think your pet may have eaten something they shouldn’t, contact your veterinarian right away.
Because the only thing we want filling Easter baskets this year…
is happy, healthy pets. 💛

Who needs a pot of gold when you’ve got pets this cute? 🌈🐾

🌸 Spring is in the air… and so are allergens! 🐾

Just like people, pets can suffer from seasonal allergies this time of year. As the weather warms up and plants begin to bloom, you may notice your pet showing signs of discomfort.

Common allergy symptoms in pets include:
• Excessive licking or chewing (especially paws)
• Itchy skin or frequent scratching
• Red or irritated skin
• Ear infections or head shaking
• Scooting or rubbing their face

Allergies can make pets miserable, but the good news is — we can help! Early intervention and proper medical management can make a huge difference in your pet’s comfort and prevent secondary infections.

If you’re noticing any of these signs, schedule an exam with us so we can create a treatment plan tailored specifically for your pet.

Let’s help them enjoy spring as much as you do! 🌷🐶🐱

📣 Bonus: Belly rubs are always included with your visit. Free of charge. 💚
