BRF went to Derby Days two weekends ago. WOW, what a great show we had!!! There were a total of six derbies, and our team won five! Sadly one of our horses pulled a shoe and could only do one of the two classes of the jumper derby. Our horses were just perfect and seemed happy to be there. The riders really stepped up to the plate and applied everything from the season. Our friends from Littlewood Farm joined us and had great success as well.

Crosswinds Farm is such a beautiful place to show with amazing jumps and footing. Our horses are always very comfortable there. Proud of our team!!

We are now well underway with the winter season. It's just worth thinking abour how often ponies and horses should be jumped. That can depend. Keep this guide handy to make sure you aren't overjumping.

2026 Derby Clinic was a huge success! This has become a fun tradition every year in the fall. We gather up all our derby looking jumps (and make new ones as needed) and set a new course in the front field. It takes us days to set and decorate, but it is well worth it! We had three groups of riders, a sourdough bake stand, yummy food, and a crafting table. This was the best weather day all year and everyone had a blast!! Love to see all the support and cheering each other on. That’s what Bella Rose is all about ❤️

Aren’t horses amazing?

A horse doesn’t see the world in quite the same way we do 🐎👀

One of the most fascinating things about horses is their incredibly wide field of vision. Because their eyes are positioned on the sides of their heads, they can see almost 360 degrees around themselves. This is a huge advantage for an animal that has evolved to detect danger, movement and potential threats from almost any direction.

But that wide field of vision also comes with some important limitations.

As the graphic shows, there are areas where a horse’s vision is less clear, particularly close to its face and directly behind it. The most obvious blind spot is immediately behind the horse. This is one of the reasons why approaching a horse from directly behind can be dangerous — the horse may not know you are there until you suddenly enter its field of vision.

There are also areas where horses are particularly good at detecting movement but may not see fine detail as clearly. So while a horse might notice something moving off to the side very quickly, it doesn't necessarily see that object in the same level of detail that we would.

And this is where understanding a horse's vision becomes especially important for anyone who works with, rides or simply spends time around horses.

Ever wondered why a horse sometimes suddenly reacts to something that you can't even see? Or why a horse might spook when you approach from a particular angle? Its incredible visual system can explain some of those seemingly mysterious reactions.

It also helps explain why horses can behave differently when something appears suddenly in front of them. Their vision is designed primarily around detecting movement and threats rather than seeing the world exactly as humans do.

Of course, every horse is an individual and factors such as lighting, distance, head position and the horse's attention can all affect what it perceives.

So next time you're standing beside a horse, remember that you're not necessarily standing in the same visual world.

Give it a chance to see you coming, approach calmly from the side, speak softly and be especially careful around those blind spots.

Because sometimes, when a horse reacts to something that seems completely harmless to us, there may actually be a very good reason — it simply saw the situation differently 🥹
