Y’all…do you see that sus creature in this box?

A customer I shipped chicks to on Monday sent me this picture earlier today and I was like, um is that a turkey?

I’ve never owned a turkey. In fact, I’m kind of scared of them. I don’t know who decided it was okay for birds to be that big.

I don’t know what kind of chaos occurred at USPS, but somehow a turkey poult ended up in a box of my chicks.

Good news though—a farm local to my customer has a lone turkey poult and will be getting a new friend tomorrow!

I’ve seen posts about things like this happening, but I’ve never had it happen in any of my shipments 😆

I’ve been busy destroying eggs…for science 🤓

First I put eggs in a soft foam shipper in a single box. Dropped it from 5 feet.

Then I took that box, put new eggs in, and put it inside a larger box with 1.5” of soft memory foam on all sides. Dropped it from 5 feet.

Then I took the original box with the foam shipper inside, added new eggs, and put it inside an even larger box with 3” of soft memory foam on all sides. Dropped it from 5 feet.

What did every packaging method have in common?

Every air cell detached after a single 5 foot drop no much how much padding I added.

Don’t worry, I kept going.

I tried bubble wrapping each egg and nestling it in crinkle paper. Same outcome.

I tried positioning eggs upright. Positioning eggs lying on their sides. Same outcome.

I tried suspending eggs inside a box with different stretchy materials. Same outcome.

All of the eggs are in the incubator now. Do you think they’ll have different hatch outcomes? 🤔

I see people say all the time that breeders need to stop hiding behind “shipping is hard on eggs” and start taking responsibility for hatch rates.

I want to have an honest discussion about what that would actually look like.

First, what is a bad hatch rate? I receive complaints ranging from “none hatched” to “only 10 hatched.”

Second, where does the breeder’s responsibility end and the factors outside their control begin?

Third, what is the customer’s responsibility to notify the breeder of issues? Many customers never actually contact me to express a concern and I’m not given the opportunity to make it right.

So ya’ll, how do we fix this? What does accountability look like? If you’re a breeder, what do you want your customers to do? If you’re a customer, what do you want your breeder to do?

The vast majority of breeders want to get it right. How can we help?

I think dark brown eggs are a lot like movie stars.

Or TikTok creators—that’s the modern equivalent, right? 😅

We compare our eggs to photos we see online the same way people compare themselves to the beautiful faces that come across their social media feeds.

The eggs in these photos are the same eggs. The only thing that changed was the lighting.

Speaking of pictures of eggs, the Marans egg shade cards we all argue about are just that—pictures of eggs. One picture of one egg for each shade on the card.

We’re all constantly measuring our own eggs against a card that takes an incalculable amount of variation and boils it down to one little box.

But egg color doesn’t fit into little boxes. Trust me, I’ve spent years trying.

What is a pullet egg?

Like actually, how do you define it?

I shared the photo in this post back in January. The brown eggs were from a pullet who had only been laying for a few weeks—her eggs weighed 65g. The olive eggs were from a two-year-old hen—her eggs weighed 55g.

You can’t tell the age of a bird by the size of her eggs. Not every line lays large or extra-large eggs, and some pullets lay surprisingly large eggs right from the start.

This is my process:

A pullet starts laying and I put her in a pen. For the next three months, I observe her.

• Do I like her egg color?
• Does she lay at least 4–5 eggs per week?
• Does she go broody in those first 3 months?
• Has her egg size reached at least 50g?

Once she checks those boxes, she goes in with a rooster and I begin hatching and shipping her eggs.

Hatchability is highest during a hen’s first year laying and gradually declines as she ages. The best chance of hatching a chick comes from a young hen in her reproductive prime. That is why every egg you receive from me will be laid by a hen between 9 and 18 months old.

I don’t select eggs based on the age of the bird who laid them. I select them based on performance.

And once a pullet has proven herself, I don’t see any reason to treat her eggs differently just because she’s still technically a pullet.

Occasionally I lose my mind and underestimate how long it’ll take me to do something…like box up 15 dozen eggs in 30 separate boxes 😅

I definitely didn’t make it to the post office by 5:00, but all of the shipping experiment orders for this week are boxed up and will be dropped off first thing tomorrow morning!
