🚨TEST HATCHERS NEEDED🚨

I’m TIRED of having whole dozens get trashed in the mail so I need 6 people to help me test an idea 💡

I’m going to ship one dozen eggs to 6 people, but here’s the twist—I’m going to put 6 in one box, 6 in a second box, and send them as two separate shipments.

You pay $20 to help me cover shipping and I will send a basic rainbow mix. Any female chicks that hatch will lay blue, green, and olive. They will ship on Saturday, 6/6.

I will need you to candle them around day 10 and let me know how many from each shipment are developing. Then I’ll need an update with the final hatch results.

Comment below if you want to help me out👇 If there’s a lot of interest, I’ll draw names tomorrow.

I’m going to let you in on a secret.

Many breeders have just one hen laying the really remarkable egg you keep seeing in their photos.

When I get an exceptional egg, my first thought is, “Hmm, I wonder if I can repeat it.”

Then I hatch every one of those eggs. Every week. For months and months and months. I grow out all the offspring and wait to see what happens.

Do any of her daughters lay an egg just like hers? What percentage do? How much variation is there? How many are complete duds?

Then I breed the daughters and do the same thing all over again.

I want to know whether the trait is repeatable. Whether it can be reproduced generation after generation.

Anyone can post a picture of a stellar egg. What I want to know is what the daughters lay.

That’s the difference between selling a beautiful hatching egg and building a line that gives others a good chance of adding that beautiful egg to their basket.

The longer I breed for egg color, the more I realize how easy it is to mistake one stellar bird for a stable line.

Getting a beautiful egg once is not the hard part.

The hard part is reproducing that egg color consistently across generations while also maintaining the traits that make a bird worth feeding.

Nothing will surprise and devastate you more than lining up eggs from full sisters and looking at the variation in front of you.

This is why raising large numbers matters so much in breeding programs. You have to give the genetics enough room to express themselves before you can select for consistency.

That one stellar hen can show you what’s possible.

A line is what happens when her daughters start doing it too.

I culled the line that laid these eggs.

At some point, some Black Copper Marans breeders stopped breeding chickens and started breeding props for social media.

~50 eggs per year.
Human-aggressive roosters.
Chronic broodiness.

Hard pass. No matter how dark the eggs are.
