At VVC Midlothian, we believe that no summer is complete without a road trip. If you plan to bring your furry friends along for the journey, preparation is key! Some pets can experience motion sickness, which may put a damper on your travel plans. Consulting your veterinarian before you hit the road is wise to ensure everyone enjoys the adventure.

Safe Travel Tips:
🚗 Secure Space: Use a crate or a pet seatbelt to keep your pet safe and secure during travel.
🚗 Never Leave Unattended: Avoid leaving your pet in a parked car, even for a few minutes; temperatures can spike dangerously fast!
🚗 Frequent Breaks: Plan your route to include regular stops for bathroom breaks and hydration.

Remember, the journey can be just as enjoyable as the destination, especially with your furry companion by your side! To learn more about VVC Midlothian, visit us at https://www.virginiaveterinarycenters.com/locations/midlothian

Sometimes, your pet’s health needs go beyond routine care. That’s where VVC Midlothian's internal medicine specialist comes in. Dr. Daugherty-Winegardner brings advanced expertise to help diagnose and treat complex conditions.

Here are a few reasons your pet might benefit from seeing an Internist:

• Their illness is uncommon, complex, or still undiagnosed
• You’re seeking a second opinion from a neutral, informed expert
• The current treatment isn’t working as expected
• They require a specialized diagnostic or therapeutic procedure

Our Internist works closely with your primary veterinarian to provide collaborative, compassionate care, so your pet gets the best possible outcome. Give us a call at (804) 744-9800 to learn more or visit https://bit.ly/3LdDwsK

Did you know that 6 minutes is all it takes for a dog to overheat in a hot vehicle and face lifelong or fatal consequences? ☀️🥵 Pets can still overheat even when the windows are down, or if the car is parked in a shaded area.

Our best advice is to not leave your dog in the car - take them with you or leave them at home with plenty of water and shade. They will happily greet you when you return!

If you experience an emergency with your pet this summer, contact us at any of our locations:

Looking for a summer fruit that’s safe to share? 🍉

Watermelon is 92% water, so it’s a great treat to help keep your pet hydrated. It also has low calories, no fat or cholesterol, and is high in potassium and vitamins A, B6, and C. But be sure to remove the seeds and rind!

Try freezing small chunks of watermelon to make an extra special treat for a hot day! 🍉

We’re thrilled to announce that Dr. Ann Marie Picone, Medical Oncologist at Virginia Veterinary Centers – Short Pump, is now officially Board-Certified in Veterinary Oncology! 🩺🐾

Becoming a board-certified specialist is no small feat—it requires years of advanced training beyond veterinary school, including a competitive residency, rigorous clinical experience, and passing a comprehensive exam administered by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM).

💡 What does that mean for your pets?
Board certification is a mark of the highest level of expertise in the field. Dr. Picone is now recognized as an expert in diagnosing and treating cancer in pets using the latest and most effective therapies—chemotherapy, immunotherapy, palliative care, and more. With her added credentials, you can feel even more confident your patients are receiving the gold standard in oncology care.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Picone on this outstanding achievement! 🐶🐱💙

From beach trips to lake days and home pool parties, swimming is a classic summer pastime. However, always keep your pet's safety in mind—after all, not all animals are natural swimmers!

Safety First:
🌊 Supervision: Always watch your pets closely when they are near water.
🌊 Hydration: Bring fresh water along to keep your pet hydrated.
🌊 Life Jackets: Invest in a doggy life jacket for those pets who may need a little extra help in the water.
🌊 Watch for Distress: Keep an eye out for signs of distress, such as excessive panting or difficulty swimming.

If your pet swallows saltwater, it can lead to dehydration and digestive distress, so be proactive in monitoring their behavior and health. If any concerning symptoms arise, don’t hesitate to call VVC Midlothian at 804-744-9800 or visit us at https://bit.ly/3XPAf9p

Our Story

Built on a long legacy of passion for animal health, the Virginia Veterinary Centers have been providing high-quality veterinary care in the Richmond area for nearly 40 years. We offer a wide array of specialty services at our three locations: Richmond, Midlothian and Fredericksburg.

To the veterinarians and staff at VVC, pets are so much more than animals. They are members of the family − and they are completely dependent on their people to make good choices regarding their health. When you pass that trust on to us, we consider that responsibility a great honor. We will always work compassionately with you while offering the best care available.
