Meet ROO !!! 🐕
She arrived with non-productive retching (trying to vomit but bringing nothing up), abdominal distention and weakness. An xray of her belly was taken immediately on arrival and she was diagnosed with GDV- gastric dilatation and volvulus.🩻
GDV is a condition where the stomach expands with air (dilatation) and then rotates on itself (volvulus). This condition is commonly seen in our large breed, deep-chested dogs (basset hounds, too).
Emergency surgery is required to deflate the stomach, rotate it back into normal position and pexy (or suture) the stomach to the right abdominal wall.
GDV is a rapidly progressing, life-threatening emergency and requires immediate intervention ! GDV can also be prevented with a prophylactic gastropexy (often times performed when your pet is spayed/neutered) and often with laparoscopy.
Roo did great, and was home to celebrate the 4th of July, thanks to our wonderful ER doctor, Dr. Grzyb!💙

Emma is doing her best to ‘take a deep breath’ for our wonderful Internal Medicine technician, Noe. 💖

Emma is visiting our Internal Medicine service, pictured with our internist Dr. Eriksson. 🩺

She had bloodwork performed during her visit and has been on a calorie restricted diet and successfully lost TWO POUNDS! Way to go Emma! 💙🐾

Emma was brought in by her amazing momma, local veterinarian Dr. Ann Yowell.

❤️Please meet Millie - a 12.5-year-old Chihuahua who is a patient with our cardiology team. ❤️
Millie was diagnosed with congestive heart failure nearly two years ago with a common genetic heart condition known as Chronic Degenerative Valve Disease. CDVD causes the heart to enlarge due to a leaky mitral valve.
Millie has been on medication to help manage her condition, and at her most recent follow-up with the Cardiology team, her family shared that she's doing exceptionally well at home—she’s full of energy and acting like a puppy again! 🐕🐾

Pictured is on of our two FABULOUS cardiologists- Dr. Erin McCarragher-with Millie and her mom, Sarah.

Meet this sweet stray Beagle named Hope! 🕊️ 🐾
Hope was a stray trauma patient who was found by a Good Samaritan who immediately took responsibility for her emergent care needs at BluePearl South Charlotte and quickly named her HOPE!
Hope's injuries included head trauma and maxillary (upper jaw) fractures. Her head trauma was handled by our experienced emergency team and emergency doctor -Dr. Oliphant! -and her jaw fractures will be repaired with HVDOS- Hospital for Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery who share the building with the BluePearl team.
She is doing well and on the mend.
Hope is being supported by Shannon, one of our great veterinary nurses! ❤️ 🐶💙

More ENDOSCOPY!🪨

Please meet Cotton (8yr old Boston Terrier).💙🐾

She ate a rock at some point which needed to be removed. She also has kidney insufficiency as a comorbidity (simultaneous presence of two or more diseases or conditions in a patient). Thankfully, we were able to protect her kidneys with IV fluids before anesthesia and removal was successful with endoscopy by one of our great internists, Dr. Eriksson!

Cotton did well and went home later in the day!

Meet Eleanor!
She decided to eat ribbon one day- not uncommon in our feline patients. Luckily, this was noted early and endoscopy was performed by one of our amazing Internists, Dr. Flood, to remove the ribbon from her stomach.
Endoscopy is placing a camera into the stomach for view (used for biopsy and foreign body retrieval). Happily the ribbon was removed easily and recovery was uneventful.
Side note- if left unnoticed, this can cause a linear gastrointestinal foreign body causing vomiting, lethargy and requiring emergency surgery.
Also- if ribbon is noted from the mouth or upon defecation- seek emergency veterinary attention 1st and NEVER PULL THE STRING! (example endoscopy ribbon removal picture in comments)

Please welcome COOKIE to the group (8 year old Golden)! Cookie presented to our emergency service with a uterine infection (otherwise known as pyometra).

As our intact female patients age, they are more susceptible to uterine infections which is a life-threatening condition requiring emergency surgery. Our fabulous ER doctor, Dr. Grzyb, performed this surgery for Cookie and she is on the mend at home with her little Lamb Chop! (surgery pix in the comments).
