West Madison Veterinary Hospital and Pet Resort

West Madison Veterinary Hospital and Pet Resort 🐾 Caring for Madison’s pets like family. Wellness care, surgery, diagnostics, and luxury boarding for dogs, cats, and exotics.

Dr. Marlene Mixon, Dr. Leah Donahue Calvert, and the staff of West Madison Veterinary Hospital provide full service veterinary care including surgery, dentistry, in-house laboratory testing as well as preventative care including vaccines, parasite prevention, and wellness lab testing. Dr. Mixon is originally from Florida. She attended Pine Forest High School in Pensacola and after she graduated, s

he moved to Alabama to attend Auburn University. She graduated from Auburn with a BS degree in microbiology in 1992. After graduation, she worked for the Auburn Vet School and the USDA over the next five years. She decided to return to vet school, graduating in 2001, and has been a practicing veterinarian since. Ever since she was young, Dr. Mixon knew she was destined to be a veterinarian. As a child, she always tried to heal injured rabbits and birds; she even “operated” on stuffed animals. During college, Dr. Mixon made friends who were from Huntsville and met her husband who is from Greenville, AL. This inspired them to move from Tennessee to the Huntsville/Madison area. Her home is shared with her husband – Stephen, their son – Brandon, a Rottweiler – Elsa and a Blue Healer Mix – Silver. Dr. Mixon is passionate about Auburn football, enjoys quilting and loves to visit the beach. She achieved her goal of having a successful business doing what she loves most – taking care of animals, as well as their owners, and promoting wellness and preventative care.

We would like to welcome Dr. Van Camp to our practice!

Dr. Van Camp grew up in central Illinois, and she knew from a young age she wanted to be a vet. She grew up surrounded by a variety of animals and had the opportunity to travel all over the world. She was an active volunteer at her local zoo until going to college.

Dr. Van Camp received her undergraduate degree in Biochemistry with a minor in Mathematics from the University of Evansville in Evansville, Indiana. She went on to Purdue University, where she earned her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. While at Purdue, she received additional training at the Belize Wildlife and Referral Clinic, Fort Wayne Zoo, and Chicago Exotic Animal Hospital.

Since graduation, she has worked in small animal/exotic practice in Mississippi and Alabama. In her spare time, she is an avid gardener and quilter. She enjoys time with her husband, two kids, and her personal zoo, which includes two dogs, three cats, two crested geckos, a bearded dragon, a king snake, and a trio of dart frogs.
