🎥🐾 Regular vet visits = a healthier, happier pet! 🩺💖

Your pet can’t tell you when something’s wrong — but routine checkups help us catch issues early, keep vaccines up to date, and ensure they’re feeling their best from nose to tail. 🐶🐱

We recommend routine labwork every 6 months, even if your pet seems healthy. Why? Because many diseases (like kidney, liver, or thyroid conditions) can sneak up silently — and early detection gives us a better chance to treat them effectively. 🧪🔬

Whether it’s a wellness exam, dental check, or preventive bloodwork, staying on schedule helps your pet live a longer, healthier life (and gets them lots of love from our team, too!).

📅 Has it been more than 6 months since your pet’s last lab work or checkup? Let’s get them on the calendar!

🚨 Distemper Outbreak in Calhoun County, AL 🚨

Multiple dogs in Calhoun County have tested positive for canine distemper — a highly contagious and often fatal virus that affects dogs, foxes, coyotes, and other wildlife. 😢

The best protection? Vaccination. 💉

If your pet is not up to date on their distemper vaccine (DHPP), they are at risk — even if they stay indoors! Distemper can be spread through the air, shared bowls, or even contaminated surfaces brought in on shoes and clothes.

🛡️ Vaccination is safe, effective, and essential.
📅 If you're unsure whether your pet is protected, give us a call today — we’ll help you check their vaccine history and get them covered.

Let’s keep your pets — and our community — safe. 🐾

Calhoun County Animal Control has made the difficult decision to euthanize all of the remaining dogs in its shelter following an outbreak of canine distemper.

🚨 Common Pet Emergencies 🚨
Courtesy of our friends at Veterinary Referral Associates, here are some situations where you should seek veterinary care immediately.

When in doubt, don’t wait — your pet’s health could depend on quick action. Know your nearest emergency vet and keep their number handy!

📞 Questions or concerns? Call us at Southpaw — we're here to help guide you.

🚨 Common Pet Emergencies You Should Know 🚨
Some pet emergencies can escalate quickly—knowing the signs could save your pet’s life.

Here are just a few conditions that every pet owner should be aware of:
🐱 Male cats: Urethral obstruction (can be fatal if they can’t p*e!)
🐶 Older large breed dogs: Hemangiosarcoma (often found on the spleen)
🐕‍🦺 Unspayed female dogs: Pyometra (a deadly uterine infection)
🐈 Older cats: Saddle thrombus/FATE (sudden hind limb paralysis)
🐾 Deep-chested dogs (like Great Danes): Bloat/GDV (a twisted stomach that requires immediate surgery)

🩺 If you notice any sudden changes in your pet’s behavior—especially pain, weakness, or distress—seek emergency care immediately.

At VRA, our emergency and specialty teams are trained to respond fast and treat these conditions with expert care.
