At Wisconsin Community Veterinary Center, we often find ourselves facing challenging medical cases, and the story of Phoenix is one of the most heartbreaking—and hopeful—we've encountered.

Phoenix came to our shelter SShelter From The Storm Animal Rescueas a stray with extensive burns covering a large portion of his body. His hair was singed, his whiskers were gone, all four feet were completely burned, his ears were swollen and necrotic, and he had a large, deep burn across his back. While we may never know the exact cause—we suspect he might have been in a car engine—what we do know is the immense pain he's been enduring.

His care has already been incredibly extensive. During initial examination and wound cleaning, we realized the true size and severity of his injuries. His ears are slowly shriveling, and we're unsure how much tissue will remain once the necrotic areas fall off.

Phoenix is currently hospitalized here at Wisconsin Community Veterinary Center, receiving around-the-clock care from our dedicated team.

His treatment includes:

Aggressive pain management to keep him as comfortable as possible.
Antibiotics to manage and prevent infection in his extensive burns.
Bandage changes every two days for his severely burned feet.

We have a long road ahead, but Phoenix is thankfully making good progress, and we remain hopeful for a full and complete recovery.

Please consider making a donation to help cover his urgent, life-saving medical expenses. Every dollar goes directly toward his recovery.

Thank you!

Employee Spotlight: Laura, Director of Staff Development and Education Programs

We're thrilled to shine a spotlight on Laura, the powerhouse driving our staff education and development!

With 15 years in the animal field—including 5 years in veterinary medicine and extensive shelter experience—Laura brings a critical, mission-focused perspective to our team. She is absolutely dedicated to the principles of Spay/Neuter and population control, ensuring our staff is equipped to deliver on that mission every day.

Outside of work, Laura is a fascinating force of nature! She's a talented crafter who makes her own paracord dog leashes and collars, and a brewer of homemade hard cider. Her loving home is run by a blended family that includes two small senior dogs, one orange cat, and a lively group of chickens!

Her resilient spirit is summed up by her motto: "The road is hard and you have to get accustomed to it" - Miranda Lambert.

Thank you, Laura, for everything you do!

Spooky Season Pet Safety & Contest Alert! 🎃👻

Halloween is right around the corner! As you get your home ready for trick-or-treaters and decorations, it's the perfect time to review these essential safety tips to ensure your pet has a fun, healthy night on October 31st:

Stash the Sweets: Get ahead of the game! Designate a high-up, secure cabinet for all chocolate and candy. Remember, common ingredients like xylitol are highly toxic, so keeping all treats out of paw's reach is critical.

Inspect the Decor: Before you finish decorating, check for hazards. Keep cords, stringy spiderwebs, and lit candles away from curious mouths and swiping tails. Battery-operated candles are a much safer alternative!

Check the Costume: If you plan to dress up your pet, make sure their costume is comfortable and doesn't restrict their movement, vision, or breathing. If they seem stressed, please skip the outfit—their comfort always comes first.

Prepare a Safe Room: Plan to keep nervous pets in a secure, quiet room with a favorite toy or blanket during peak trick-or-treating hours. This helps reduce anxiety caused by the constant doorbell ringing and unfamiliar visitors.

🐶🐱🦄 Costume Contest Coming Soon!

Think your pet has the best Halloween look? WCVC will be hosting a pet costume contest next week! The winner will receive a special prize from our clinic.

Stay tuned later this week for more details on how to enter! We can't wait to see those spooky, silly, and sweet looks!
