May the 4th be with you!

"Judge me by my size, do you? Vet visits I must endure." – Yoda… or maybe just our smallest but mightiest patients

Here are some safety tips and information with the upcoming extreme weather conditions!

- Rule of thumb - if it's too cold for you, it's too cold for them.

- While most dogs are comfortable above 45°F, pets that are small, elderly or thin-coated may need sweaters once temps fall below that threshold.

- Between 20°F and 32°F, frostbite and hypothermia risks rise, making coats, booties and shorter walks essential. Below 20°F, conditions become dangerous for most dogs, and outdoor exposure should be limited to brief, supervised outings with protective gear. Walks should be shortened in very cold weather and the AVMA recommends that no pet be outside for long periods of time in below-freezing weather.

- Make sure to do regular paw checks! After outdoor walks, inspect your pet’s paws for ice, salt, or cracks. Cleaning their paws with a warm, damp cloth can prevent irritation and ingestion of toxic substances like antifreeze or rock salt. Their extremities are the most susceptible to frostbite, like ears, tails, and feet.

- Be alert! If your pet shows signs of frostbite (pale or blue skin) or hypothermia (lethargy, weakness, or shivering), seek veterinary care immediately. Early intervention can make a big difference.

- Leave your pets at home! We strongly urge you to NOT bring your animals with you while travelling in cold temperatures. Much like the summer months, leaving your animal in the car in the cold is also a hazard that we want to avoid.
