When performing a Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO), evaluating and treating the meniscus is a critical part of the procedure.

Arthroscopic-assisted TPLO offers several advantages over traditional open arthrotomy.

Arthroscopy uses a small camera inserted into the joint through tiny incisions, allowing complete visualization of the stifle with significantly less surgical trauma than opening the joint through an arthrotomy. The magnified view provided by arthroscopy allows for detailed assessment of the cranial cruciate ligament, menisci, cartilage surfaces, and synovium. This enhanced visualization can improve the detection of subtle meniscal tears and cartilage lesions that may be more difficult to identify with traditional techniques.

Because less soft tissue disruption is required, arthroscopic-assisted TPLO is associated with decreased postoperative inflammation, pain, and joint swelling compared to arthrotomy. Minimally invasive joint inspection can contribute to improved patient comfort and may facilitate a smoother early recovery period following surgery.
