A Candid Look Behind the Scenes
We usually like to keep things light here—sharing happy moments, silly personalities, and the little victories that make sanctuary life so rewarding. But once in a while, we also feel it’s important to share the harder side of this work. And right now, things are hard.
The ongoing drought is creating shortages and rising costs for hay, straw, and feed. Thanks to your incredible support, we were able to secure much of the hay we need—a huge relief. But we still need to secure straw for winter, and we’re preparing for significant increases in feed costs in the months ahead.
The extreme weather is also taking a toll on our animals, especially our senior and medically fragile residents. Vet visits have increased, and just last night, Kevin the goat suffered a seizure and is now at CSU receiving care. Between emergencies, diagnostics, medications, and ongoing treatments, we have already exceeded our medical budget for the year. And medical care is one place where we simply cannot cut corners.
Behind the scenes, we’re also facing a significant staffing shortage. The animals still need the same level of care every single day, so many of those gaps are currently being filled by our founder and Executive Director on top of everything else.
We’re not sharing this because we’re giving up. Quite the opposite. Our animals are receiving the care they need, and they will continue to. But keeping that promise during a year like this is taking more resources and more hands than usual.
And we’re not alone. Rescues and sanctuaries everywhere are feeling the strain right now. If there’s an organization you love, please show them some extra love—donate, volunteer, share their work, or simply send a kind word.
We could all use a little extra support right now. 💚
(and yes, we can only see Kevin's sweet bum)
