**The Good Life Refuge Summer Games continue… 😂💦**

Beatrice has the pool. JonLuc has the full-body soak. And Leo? Well, Leo has taken summer recreation in a slightly different direction.

**Mud wallow bobbing. For rocks. 🐷🪨**

Forget bobbing for apples—apparently rocks are much more exciting when you’re a pig. Leo happily dunks his entire snout into the mud, roots around until he finds the perfect one, and proudly comes back up with his prize.

We’re not entirely sure what the judging criteria are, but Leo takes this sport VERY seriously. 😂

At this point, we’re just waiting to see which resident invents the next sanctuary summer activity.

Happy National Dog Day to Tia! 🐾💚

While the rest of the Good Life Refuge crew has been finding creative ways to beat the heat—Beatrice in the pool, JonLuc going for the full-body soak, and Leo bobbing for rocks—Tia would like everyone to know that she has chosen a more sophisticated approach:

Air conditioning. 😂🐶❄️

Our livestock guardian dog apparently takes the “guardian” part a little more loosely on especially hot days. Why patrol the pasture during the day when there’s a perfectly good house to supervise?

So while everyone else splashes, wallows, and soaks, you may find Tia happily inside, keeping a very close eye on the couch, the kitchen…and perhaps the refrigerator.

Work smarter, not harder, Tia. 😂
Happy National Dog Day to our sweet girl—and to all the dogs who make our lives better! 🐾❤️

**Apparently, pool season is officially a thing at Good Life Refuge. 😂💦**

First Beatrice showed us how turkeys beat the heat… and now JonLuc has decided the alpacas deserve a pool day, too.

Except JonLuc didn’t just dip his toes in.

**He was ALL IN.** 🦙💦😂

When we first spotted him, he was with his whole body lying in the pool, apparently living his absolute best life. Of course, the moment we approached, he immediately got up—as if to say, *“What? I wasn’t doing anything. I was just… standing near the pool.”*

Sure, JonLuc. We saw you. 😂

At this rate, the kiddie pools are becoming the hottest summer amenity at Good Life Refuge. Beatrice and JonLuc have already joined the pool club… **who’s next?** ☀️💦

You know it’s HOT when even the turkey gets in the pool! ☀️🦃💦

Beatrice has officially figured out the best way to beat the summer heat—just step right in! 😂

While some of us might prefer a little shade and an ice-cold drink, Beatrice knows that sometimes you just have to put your feet in the pool and cool those turkey toes.

Stay cool out there, friends! Beatrice certainly is. 💦💚

$5 Friday: Help Us Keep Saying “Yes” to Medical Care ❤️‍🩹

It’s $5 Friday, and today we’re asking for a little help with something that has been especially heavy this year: medical care.

Our veterinary expenses have already stretched far beyond what we budgeted. Between emergencies, diagnostics, medications, ongoing treatments, and caring for an aging population of residents, there simply hasn’t been much of a break.
When an animal suddenly stops eating, becomes lame, loses weight, or shows signs that something is wrong, waiting isn’t an option. They depend on us to notice—and to act.

That’s where your $5 can make a real difference.

If 100 people give just $5 today, that’s $500 toward the next exam, blood panel, medication refill, or emergency vet visit. Small gifts truly add up when a community comes together.

We never want finances to be the reason we hesitate when one of our residents needs help. Your support helps us continue making decisions based on what they need, when they need it.

Can you spare $5 for their medical care this Friday? ❤️‍🩹

RIP, Sweet Jett 💔

Last week, we had to say an unexpected and heartbreaking goodbye to Jett, our sweetest little roo.

After Jett suddenly suffered a neurological event, we rushed him to our avian veterinarian, hoping we could find the cause and help him recover. Sadly, the examination revealed something we never could have anticipated. Despite his young age, Jett’s little body was riddled with cancer, affecting his throat, liver, and abdomen. His liver was failing, which ultimately caused the neurological symptoms we had witnessed.

There was nothing more we could do to make him better, but we could make sure he didn’t suffer. Surrounded by love, we helped Jett peacefully cross the Rainbow Bridge.

It never feels fair to lose them, but losing someone so young is especially difficult. We wish Jett could have had so much more time with us.
Rest peacefully, sweet boy. You were deeply loved, and you will be missed. ❤️

A Candid Look Behind the Scenes

We usually like to keep things light here—sharing happy moments, silly personalities, and the little victories that make sanctuary life so rewarding. But once in a while, we also feel it’s important to share the harder side of this work. And right now, things are hard.

The ongoing drought is creating shortages and rising costs for hay, straw, and feed. Thanks to your incredible support, we were able to secure much of the hay we need—a huge relief. But we still need to secure straw for winter, and we’re preparing for significant increases in feed costs in the months ahead.

The extreme weather is also taking a toll on our animals, especially our senior and medically fragile residents. Vet visits have increased, and just last night, Kevin the goat suffered a seizure and is now at CSU receiving care. Between emergencies, diagnostics, medications, and ongoing treatments, we have already exceeded our medical budget for the year. And medical care is one place where we simply cannot cut corners.

Behind the scenes, we’re also facing a significant staffing shortage. The animals still need the same level of care every single day, so many of those gaps are currently being filled by our founder and Executive Director on top of everything else.

We’re not sharing this because we’re giving up. Quite the opposite. Our animals are receiving the care they need, and they will continue to. But keeping that promise during a year like this is taking more resources and more hands than usual.

And we’re not alone. Rescues and sanctuaries everywhere are feeling the strain right now. If there’s an organization you love, please show them some extra love—donate, volunteer, share their work, or simply send a kind word.

We could all use a little extra support right now. 💚
(and yes, we can only see Kevin's sweet bum)
