Soccer practice? Sign Alfredo up! Alfredo loved hitting the field with members of Loudoun United FC to practice his passing and his snuggles too!

Thank you Loudoun United for having this goofy pup over for a visit - running after the ball up and down the field and getting all the pats made for the perfect day! 🐶❤️⚽️

This week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week and we want to take a moment to recognize and celebrate the people who answer the calls.

Our team of 3 dispatchers fielded over 12,000 calls in 2023 providing timely information to Humane Law Enforcement Officers in the field, coordinating across response teams and offering professional assistance to our community. From injured wildlife to neonatal kittens to found pet reports and everything in between, our dispatchers impress us every day with their depth of knowledge and ability to keep us all moving, informed and helping people and their pets.

On April 2, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors recognized Loudoun County Animal Services, Loudoun County Fire and Rescue and Loudoun County Sheriff's Office with a proclamation recognizing April 14-20, 2024, as National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.

We love this adoption update for Earl Grey & William of Orange! Their adopters write:

"The boys came to us a bit shut down. We gave them the bathroom to decompress. Spent the first day behind a dresser stacked like two loaves of bread and refusing any eye contact.

We knew we had some waiting to do. They slowly began to trust us and relax a bit.
Finally they came to us and the rest is history !

Now they are the adventuresome, playful, zoomy and totally goofy cats they should be. Thank you for the opportunity to bring them into our home."

Thank you for giving this pair a safe space to decompress and the time to get to know you! We are thrilled to hear that Earl Grey and William of Orange are living the good life with all the playful, zoomy adventures a cat could want!

Adopters Needed as 40-Plus Rabbits Arrive at Loudoun County Animal Services

On Friday, April 5, 2024, LCAS received 43 rabbits, ranging from two days to two years old, from a Loudoun resident. The resident had initially acquired just three rabbits as pets, but their numbers grew rapidly in a short period of time. “Rabbits really can multiply incredibly quickly, and they start reproducing at just four months of age. In addition to significant health and behavioral benefits, this really demonstrates why spay and neuter of all pets, including rabbits, is so important,” says Animal Shelter Operations Manager Melissa Heard.

To help prospective adopters learn more about rabbit care, LCAS is hosting a free “Rabbits 101” course on Thursday April 18, 2024, 6:00 - 07:00 p.m., where attendees will learn all about rabbit care and leave with a voucher to adopt a rabbit at no charge. For those who do not attend the class, the rabbit adoption fee is temporarily $25, and rabbits are “adopt one, receive a second free!”

Alfredo is desperately looking for an adoptive home!

You may remember Alfredo from a few weeks ago when we posted that he needed to get out of the shelter ASAP. We had an incredible foster family step up and give Alfredo a much-needed break from the shelter. Thanks to them, we have so much information on who this goofy, sensitive pup is in a home. However, a foster home is not a permanent solution, and while we are grateful that Alfredo got a break from the kennel, the foster home was only temporary. Alfredo is now back at the shelter, he needs an adoptive home.

What we learned about Alfredo in a home:

🐶Alfredo does well in his crate and will sleep in it overnight.
🐶Alfredo is housetrained and quickly caught on to the walk/potty routine in his foster home.
🐶Alfredo loves fetch. He enjoys his snuggles and being near his people. In just a few weeks Alfredo has learned – sit, down, heel, touch, paw, roll over and wait.
🐶Alfredo is super on the leash and enjoyed going on runs with his foster humans. He is also super in the car for car rides!
🐶Alfredo needs a routine and thrives when he has figured out what the schedule is and what he can expect.
🐶Alfredo needs daily long walks/play sessions along with mental energy outlets like training, chews and puzzle toys too.

An ideal home for Alfredo will have no other dogs and as a rowdy, young and large puppy (80lbs+) who loves to romp and jump and put EVERYTHING in his mouth, including little fingers, we are recommending he goes to a home with older children if there are any in the home. While we know he will thrive with training, we want to place him where he can succeed from the start.

Alfredo’s fosters state: "Alfredo’s a huge fan of the bones! He’s really getting the hang of ‘touch’ and slowly introducing ‘roll over’ - he’s uber smart and quick to catch on….We notice he wags his tail a lot more now compared to the first week when he got here... He ‘kennels’ on command and doesn’t counter surf (despite being tall enough to see the food). Alfredo loves his routines and cuddles! He will need to have his ‘person’ in his future forever home."

Alfredo cannot stay at the shelter, as he is incredibly stressed here, but unfortunately, we receive very little community interest in adult pets who are not housed at LCAS, and did not receive any adoption inquiries while he was in foster care. Now that he is here, with better visibility, we would love to find him an adopter to call his own, could that be you?

We are open 11am-6pm every day for adoptions. Not the right fit for Alfredo? Help us spread the word with a like, comment or share!

FREE GPS COLLAR?

It might be April 1st but we're not fooling around! While supplies last, Loudoun County residents can get a code to redeem for a free Tractive GPS tracker for their dog or cat.

Trackers are free but pet owners will still need to acquire a subscription plan to activate the GPS function. Plans start as low as $6 a month.

All pets can get lost, even indoor pets, and it is estimated that 1 in 3 pets will go missing in their lifetimes. In addition to microchips and tags on collars, GPS trackers can add a layer of safety and peace of mind.

Stop by the shelter any day of the week from 8:30am-6:00pm and ask for your tracker code today!

Why is Ava the purr-fect cat? We're glad you asked...

No it is not her stellar loafing ability, her sweet personality, her delight in new friends stopping by to say hello or the adorable head bumps she gives when she wants attention. No, Ava is perfection because of her crispy meows that demand you stop whatever it is you are doing and pet her - right meow!

Ava's meows are the cutest, crunchiest sound. She likes to offer lots of little ones and will happily chatter back at you if you stop by to say hello. No drawn out, dramatic loud mewls from Ava. Just short, staccato-like, absolutely perfect meow! meow! meows!

Want to meet Ava? Want to fill your home with happy little cat sounds? Stop by the shelter and ask about her today! We are open for adoptions 11am-6pm.
