How to keep your pets safe during New Year’s Eve celebrations

Ringing in 2024 may be exciting for humans but it can be frightening for dogs with all the loud noises.
Fireworks are one of the biggest ways the new year is celebrated every year similar to July 4.

Here are some tips for keeping your pet safe this year:

Petting your dog -- If you or someone else is able to stay home with your pet, keep them in a safe room. That is a room with the least amount of windows.
It is also a good idea to give them a little extra affection.
Play music or put on a movie to cover up the noise. You can also give them a treat that takes some time to chew or a KONG with peanut butter to keep them busy.
Use a Thundershirt. A Thundershirt is like a weighted blanket that your dog wears.
Cats and dogs like a place where they can hide whether it’s under your bed or in a cozy crate.
Take them for a walk before it gets dark.
Make sure your dog has an updated collar with an ID tag in case anything happens.
If you are celebrating the new year elsewhere and leaving your dog at home, make sure all exits are closed off, food and medication are put away and make sure your pet is comfortable.

We are ready to close 2023, it’s time to look ahead to the new year and start setting goals for you and your canine team in 2024. Setting high-quality goals—and crushing them—is more than possible. In fact, it’s well within your grasp and ACA wants to hear them and help.

5 Essential Guidelines
1. Be specific.
What do you want to achieve? Get down to the nitty-gritty and be super specific when you answer that question. Also, look out for any roadblocks that could keep you from reaching your goal, and make a plan to knock them out of the way.
Questions to ask yourself: What am I trying to accomplish here? Why do I want to make this goal happen?

2. Make goals measurable.
This one goes hand in hand with making your goals specific. If a goal isn’t measurable, then you have no way of knowing when you’ve accomplished it.

3. Give goals a time limit.
It’s important to set a time limit—because you need a finish line. Take that goal of yours, create a plan, and break it all the way down into daily activities. Then, give yourself a deadline. Hint: Planners like the Q Coach 2024 Dogged ULTIMATE dog planner to set your goals, schedule trials, capture dog information, track progress, and MORE!. They’ll help you manage your schedule, grow as a canine team, and crush your goals—no matter what they are.

4. Goals need to be yours.
Let’s be honest—trying to go after someone else’s goals for your life never works out. Sure, your breeder might want you to finish certain titles. But it won’t happen unless you want it to. Why? Because working hard to win isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s tough. And you won’t have the drive to stick with it if you’re working toward a goal you’re not even passionate about.

5. Put goals in writing.
Something special happens when you write down specific goals. So get those goals down on paper, along with all the steps it’ll take for you to make them happen. Seeing your goals in black and white will help you hold yourself accountable and track your progress along the way.

Many of you have been hearing/reading about the new respiratory illness in dogs.

As we have said in your confirmations and on our pages, do not bring your dogs if they are sneezing, coughing, have discharge from their nose, are lethargic, have diarrhea, vomiting, or seem sick in any way. To further protect your dog, you might consider crating out of your car at ACA and at any dog event you attend.

I would further add that I would not have my dogs playing, socializing with dogs outside of my household.

Scientists at the University of New Hampshire may have identified a pathogen that has sickened possibly thousands of dogs and killed some of them across the country.

🕑 🕑 CLOCKS CHANGE 🕑 🕑

Daylight Saving Time is ending Sunday, Nov. 5. This is the time we "fall back," by turning the clocks back one hour at 2 a.m

🛑 BE AWARE 🛑 BE SAFE 🛑
The organization AAA says that with this change, an earlier sunset and darkness can lead to an increase in the number of pedestrians killed or seriously injured by vehicles. Drivers are advised to take precautionary steps such as watching out for pedestrians when backing up in parking lots or driveways, using headlights to be seen, and being mindful of children and others who are outdoors in the afternoon and evening as it gets darker earlier.

When it comes to pedestrians, to be seen better AAA suggests staying in well-lit areas, wearing light or reflective clothing, and using sidewalks and pathways.

So very proud of our Scentwork students who crushed it this weekend!

From student Celinda:

This past weekend four students from A Click Above went to our first scent work trial.(AKC novice containers) We became friends moving up through the levels of Karen's classes. We were all very nervous about going to the trail, so we thought if we did it together it would be less intimidating. For Ellie and Flynn, Abby, Taryn and Cedar, and Maple and me and Summer. For some of us, it was our first dog competition of any kind.

Well....Karen Allen is just the bestest teacher in the world. We all crushed it this weekend. Summer did great! There were 17 dogs in Novice A and in her first search she not only Q'd she won third place!!!!
Everyone Q'ed in the first search. In the second search we not only all Q'ed we took 1st-4th place. (That's all the places that receive ribbons) Can you believe it, A Click Above dogs took the whole class!!!

The next day Summer and Ceder Q'ed and received our Novice Containers Title.

We are so proud of our dogs and incredibly grateful to have such an amazing teacher in Karen.

Our Philosophy

A Click Above, LLC is a partnership built on passion and excellence. Our combined expertise spans several decades (more than we care to admit!) and across many venues - from agility to obedience to breed and beyond.

We employ positive reinforcement and operant training methods to achieve our impressive results. "Clicker training" is at the heart of this philosophy and enables us to teach everything from basic manners to tricks to complex handling. We believe everything for the dog - and handler - should be fun and enjoyable.

Most of our classes have multiple instructors to ensure each student gets the time and attention needed to build rewarding partnerships that will last a lifetime.

Our facility has one indoor building with sprint turf footing measuring 100' x 125'. We are able to divide the area to safely hold two concurrent classes with enough room left for crating. The building is fully heated in winter and air conditioned in summer, providing both dogs and handlers the ability to comfortably train year-round.
