Brachycephalic dogs(Bulldogs-American and English, French Bulldogs, Boxers, Pugs, Shih Tzus, Boston Terriers, Pekinese) are dogs with short noses and flat, wide skulls, are at a higher risk of heat stroke due to their respiratory tract structure. Their shortened skulls can make it difficult to breathe, and they may not be able to pant as well as other dogs. This can lead to them overheating quickly in hot weather.
Please be use extra precaution if you have any if the breeds above! If you sense that your pet is in trouble; don’t hesitate to get them to a vet’s office right away!

Welcome Dr. Jessica Surman!
Our current staff of veterinarians: Dr. Keith Robbins, Dr. Brian Carson, Dr. Christy Trinidad, Dr. Tatiana Robinson and Dr. Marta Acha are excited to welcome Jessica back to the team!
You can schedule an appointment with her today! Dr. Surman's hours will be expanding to full-time Tuesday - Friday starting July 22nd.
Dr. Surman has been working as a small animal general practitioner for the past nine years. Her family recently relocated from Herndon to Leesburg and was looking for a new adventure closer to home when she found Catoctin Veterinary Clinic in 2022. Dr. Surman is loved and adored by our clients. She is excited to be back again full-time!
Dr. Surman is a graduate of the University of Maryland and completed her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
She has a passion for surgery, dentistry, dermatology, and preventative care. When she is not at the clinic, she spends time with her family and three beautiful children. Together they have 2 dogs (Rex and Alba), three cats (Batman, Penny and Georgie), a bearded dragon (Queen Elizardbeth) and many chickens. She is excited to return and help pets and their owners thrive at Catoctin Veterinary Clinic.

With summer festivities kicking off, we want to remind you about the symptoms of heatstroke and prevention tips:
-Never leave your pet unattended in a car
-When hot/humid, keep your pet’s time outdoors limited
-Keep your pet hydrated
-Ensure your pet has ventilation and a cool environment
-Dogs with short noses are at higher risk due to their condensed facial anatomy and restricted ability to cool themselves
-If any signs of heat stroke appear, contact our team immediately.

Ticks! Ticks! Ticks!
They are nasty little creatures that carry diseases that are harmful to pets and humans!
We see them year-round here in Virginia.
Tick season in Virginia is generally considered to be April through September, when ticks are most active in warmer weather.
We strongly recommend using preventatives on your pets year round, as well as vaccinating for Lyme disease.
We have preventives in the office at all times. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns about your pets!

⭐️Our ER Department will be CLOSED from Midnight - Friday 05.24.24 until Monday 05.27.24 at 6:00 AM.
They are OPEN on Memorial Day, open 24 hours/day M - F weekdays, and close again on Friday night(s) at Midnight.
For the foreseeable future, due to the national shortage of veterinary staff, our ER will continue the weekend closures. They are doing all they can to return to full 365-day services as soon as possible.

Common symptoms our patients exhibit include excessive itching, red/inflamed skin, as well as recurring ear infections.

Tomorrow starts “Westminster Week” with the Masters Agility Championship, Obedience, and Dock Diving! There are many teams from Virginia/Maryland area competing this weekend! Dogs have to qualify in order to compete this weekend! As long as they have a canine partners or a purebred alternative listing number, they can qualify.
Next week starts the confirmation shows! Always a fun thing to watch about the different breeds!
Some very helpful information here! It’s so easy for our pets to pick up pounds! The problems that come with obese pets are serious ones! It’s never too late to help your pet’s drop those excess pounds!
