With tomorrow being Hairball Awareness Day, we wanted to remind our cat parents about the importance of preventing hairballs.

Accumulated from excessive grooming, hairballs can build in your cat’s digestive system and either get coughed up or in some cases, need surgical removal.
If your cat is excessively vomiting, lethargic, loses their appetite, or has diarrhea or constipation, these may be signs of a blockage and you should contact our team immediately.

It’s National Canine Fitness Month!
Healthy weight and body condition can lead to a longer and happier life for our dogs. Regular exercise helps dogs move their joints and maintain muscle. Exercise and interactive play can reduce stress, anxiety, and boredom.
Going on walks, taking them swimming, and fetch are great ways for your dogs to get exercise.
Always be mindful of dogs that haven’t done much over the winter so they don’t overexert and hurt themselves.
Some of us like to pursue sports with our dogs to keep them happy and healthy.
We would love to see some more pictures of what our clients do with their dogs to keep them happy, healthy and fit!

We are coming up on thunderstorm and firework season. Don’t wait until it’s too late to talk to your veterinarian about options if your dog’s are starting to have issues.
There are many natural things to try as well as medication’s to help soothe your dog. Having a reactive dog myself, I use a combination of both to help him deal with the noise of storms and fireworks.

We are all about the pet holidays! Today is "Respect Your Cat Day!"
Pictured is our furiend Palmer! While Palmer is a wonderful pet. He is not a fan of coming to the vet. We have a healthy
"respect" for Palmer and give his mother, some things to give him by mouth before his visits to make him a happier cat when he comes to see us!
Cats like Arnold Palmer deserve all the “respect” that we can give them to make their appointments less stressful!

The results are in! Birdie’s embark DNA results and genetic testing came back today. 🧬 🧪

40.6% Shih Tzu
12.3% Lhasa Apso
6.8% Golden Retriever
3.8% Dalmatian
36.5% Supermutt

On top of now knowing her breed combination, Birdie is at risk for Alanine Aminotransferase. The generic health testing showed Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) activity. This is a cytoplasmic enzyme found mainly in hepatocytes (liver cells). Although it can occasionally be found elsewhere, such as skeletal muscle, kidney, and red blood cells, ALT is the most liver-specific of the liver enzymes, so it’s commonly used by veterinarians as a measure of liver health.

Birdie is likely to have lower ALT activity (‘low normal’) than dogs without this condition. So slight elevations in ALT, which could indicate liver injury, can go undiagnosed with standard blood testing since ALT may remain within reference ranges despite liver damage in her case.

This is wonderful and important information for Birdie’s veterinarian and owner to know to help extend her life and monitor her liver function.

Call us today to schedule your pet for genetic health testing!
