๐ŸŒž Good day for a flower shirt and some uneventful first rides! ๐ŸŒป

11/26/2025

Riding this c**t tonight, a rumor I heard a few months ago rang in my head as he loped around. A rumor about myself. An assumption really, made by a local trainer who I've never met. One who was apparently threatened when their clients asked about taking their horse to my program.

"She's heavy handed," they told their client.

~~~~
When I was a young teen, I begged to have a riding lesson with a reining trainer I looked up to. I spent my hard earned money from pushing cattle and selling horses I'd trained to local 4-H kids.
"She's too heavy handed." I over heard the trainer tell my mother as I rode my three year old gelding (that I'd paid for and broke out at 13 by myself) around their fancy arena. They had implied to my mother that I wouldn't make a good rider.
I cried the entire 2 1/2 hour drive home from that trainers place. That was when I vowed I would never make another rider feel the way I did that day; defeated and hopeless on the back of their own animal. Especially from the person who they went to for help and education.
~~~~~

So there I was at a fun show, helping my 13 year old client get through her nerves, and I overhear a bitter trainer spreading a rumor about my abilities.

Over the years, I've dedicated myself to being as soft as possible with these athletes. And throughout all the years of college equine education, clinics, lessons, internships, self lived experience, etc. You know what I've learned about "heavy handedness"?
It's lack of feel. If you focus less on trying to be soft, and more of trying to feel the right timing with your horse, the "heaviness" goes away on its own.

At 13 years old, I probably didn't have good feel. And if that trainer would have decided to be kind and helpful, maybe I would have found it a lot sooner. But what matters is that I did find it.

Tonight, loping around this c**t that I started last fall, who's with me again for a winter tune up; I have to think: I'd rather be a "heavy handed" trainer than have an ugly attitude. Because if I do ever chose to be heavy handed, it's fixable. Unlike bad personality traits of some of these trainers. Trainers' who's cycle of immature bullying pushes more and more kids out of our sport.

So if this reaches you or your child who's been told they can't do it by a bully; I promise you, they can.

I might be a small program, but my program will continue to try to break the cycle one child and horse at a time. Regardless of the attempted besmirching from others.

Took some clients' horses to a little fun show today; so I decided I'd run Talon in a barrel pattern. Not bad for his 3rd time being entered. I think he likes it lol

Just an appreciation post for this little roping, cutting, donkey sorting, reining, barrel racing, horse that has no business being useful at 6yrs old๐Ÿ’•
He won me two bridles last weekend and showed 100 people what a real ground tie looks like during an extreme trail competition. I'm so grateful to him๐Ÿฅฐ

Gambler
7yr old APHA gelding. Green horse in training.
He's every bit of 15.1hh. Vetted, chiro done, been hauled to roping practice, etc.
He needs a job. He's big, friendly, class clown personality type. Meaning if he can make teacher (you) upset by messing with them, he will continue to do it.
Needs an experienced rider. He's confident, athletic, curious, and powerful mover.

If you like to bully your horses, get in their face or nit pick them, he's not for you.

He needs a confident rider with good seat, quiet, firm hands and won't take his sass as a personal attack.

I enjoy him, I got him to have a great stop, soft face, and knows legs (no spurs). He's starting to get some buttons as you can see in videos.

He seems to respond well to running horse style training. I don't know if he'd be a barrel horse, but he responds well to the style. $๐Ÿ”Ÿk. Price only negotiable after you come ride him. Holt, MO.

I've seen a lot of negative posts about trainers lately; and I want to off set the algorithm by posting a first ride of this coming 3yr Kudo Cat filly that will be in the Salina Farmers and Ranchers Sale May 17th.

Everyone has their own methods; my methods change a bit horse-to-horse. But for anyone at home who's got hot blooded, jumpy, wild athletes they are trying to start. I hope you see this as support.

The goal if you want a c**t with performance in their young future, is to unlock their feet. Get their feet and their nose connected as soon as possible.
In our barn, there's nothing more dangerous than a horse with locked up feet. The only way for those horses to go when their stalled up, is UP. This is why restarts take longer than untouched c**ts.

So for these fancy cowhorse bred, running bred, sensitive to the touch kind of c**ts, I like to "ride the stirrup" for a while until they look as calm and relaxed as my filly here.

This is how I get soft, quiet, freak-out free first rides on these athletic little devils. This was her second day with a bit, and I feel she was really trying to be soft with it as well.
And if you're thinking, "she looks totally chill". Than GOOD. That means I'm good at my job! BORING FIRST RIDES ARE THE GOAL.

The trick with these athletes is to not let them know they are fancy freaks until YOU'RE ready to turn it on later!
