If there’s one thing we’ve learned on this journey with Blue Thunder, it’s that everyone has an opinion.
We’ve heard it all.
“This horse won’t stay sound.”
“He’ll never be able to carry a kid after competing at that level.”
“He’ll be mentally fried.”
“Savannah won’t be able to ride behind Matt.”
All the things. But God….
This weekend, we watched something beautiful unfold.
We watched a horse with every opportunity to be dishonest take care of his little girl like she was precious cargo. Not once did Blue try to take advantage of her youth or inexperience. If anything, he tried too hard. He listened harder. Tried harder. Wanted to do his job better.
We watched Matt’s years of work play out live.
On their second run, Savannah pushed for a higher degree of difficulty. The result? A few break-of-gait penalties in the fast-to-slow transitions. Not because Blue was being difficult, but because he was giving his kid absolutely everything he had. These kind of mistakes come from effort, not unwillingness. Easy fixes for the next one.
Building this kind of horse is no accident.
It’s years of thoughtful training, horsemanship, and a trainer who always kept the end goal in mind. Matt Mills never just built an Open horse. He built a partner. A horse that could one day carry a child safely and confidently toward her dreams.
The comments from people this weekend about Blue’s demeanor, kindness, and willingness meant more than they know. Because for all of us Blue has come first. These were affirmations.
The world is quick to tell you what can’t happen. God specializes in showing you what can.
Sometimes the greatest victories aren’t found at the top of the leaderboard. Sometimes they’re found in the quiet moments when a horse proves exactly who he is.
It takes a village. We are incredibly grateful for ours.
