Cat Care Society is a non-profit, limited-admission cat shelter founded in 1981 to improve the quality of life for cats in need in the Denver metro area. Our unique and free-roaming approach views all cats as worthy, regardless of their age or abilities. We are non-discriminatory in our love for cats and take in cats that may not have a chance anywhere else. This includes cats that have tested pos

itive for FIV or FeLV, or have been diagnosed with chronic health conditions such as diabetes or kidney disease. We pride ourselves in finding these cats loving homes and educating cat owners on the care requirements for cats with special needs. We provide a temporary refuge for cats in need until an appropriate home can be found for each. Veterinary care, premium diet, and human interaction are lovingly provided by dedicated staff and volunteers. Approximately 800 cats come into our care each year! As we receive no government funding, Cat Care Society is supported by a number of loyal volunteers, donors, and partners, without whom we could not operate. Our staff and board of directors work together to ensure that every cat receives an enriching environment and the opportunity to find a home where they can flourish.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Clear the Shelters Weekend!

Planning to visit us Saturday, August 29? Here’s what you need to know:

🕛 Expect a wait: We open at 12 PM, and entry will be limited due to our free-roaming shelter. Check in at the table outside to join the waitlist.

📝 Application required: Only guests with an adoption application submitted online can enter. Save time by applying before you arrive!

🧳 Bring a carrier: All adopted cats must leave in a pet-safe carrier or backpack. Cardboard carriers are available for an additional fee.

🚫 No 24-hour holds: 24-hour adoption holds will not be available August 28–29.

💛 Interested in a cat who isn’t ready yet? Some cats may be eligible for an if/when hold. Ask our staff for details—availability varies.

🐱 Kittens: A limited number of kittens are expected, and kittens are not included in the waived-fee special. Kitten adoption fees are $200 for one or $350 for two. If you are interested in adopting a kitten, you may want to consider coming another day.

📦 Dropping off donations? In-kind donations can be dropped off outside the shelter, no need to wait in line! Please fill out a donation receipt at drop-off so we can properly thank you.

👕 While you’re at the shelter, grab a “Never Too Old to Be Loved” t-shirt or poster featuring our sweet senior kitty, Samosa!

We have an from Gwen, who adopted Saucy and Jay on Mother’s Day 2025. They came to CCS looking to adopt adult cats as they are often overlooked.

“Saucy and Jay (JJ) have adapted beautifully to their new home and to each other!

“JJ’s more outgoing personality really helped Saucy come out of his shell. JJ is very loving and playful, loves to be held. Saucy loves to be petted and brushed, and he always rubs on our legs, but does not want to be picked up, and we think that’s just fine. They chase each other and are very playful with toys and with each other. They are so well matched, it’s just great!”

We're highlighting another special senior and staff favorite for , Pamela! This sassy black cat is about 9 years old, loves affection, and being a lap cat. She’s made her TV debut appearing on Denver’s Mile High Living to help promote Clear the Shelters. Pamela loved the spotlight and exploring the newsroom while advocating for senior cats to get adopted!

We've evolved a lot over the past 45 years, but our core value remains the same: every cat deserves a chance to thrive. We’re proud to continue building a community where that can happen — for cats in our shelter, cats in homes, and cats throughout Colorado.

We believe caring for cats is a community effort. Our staff and volunteers care for cats every day, adopters open their homes, community partners share resources and expertise, and supporters help provide the financial foundation that allows this work to continue.

We have an from Claire, who adopted Peanut (orange and white, now Patrick) after his five-week medical hold, and Spanky (tricolor, now Pansy) in April and May 2026, respectively. Claire came to CCS looking for an adult or senior cat and had seen Pansy on the CCS website. After learning that Pansy’s housemate was also at CCS, Claire was happy to adopt them both!

“Both cats have adjusted beautifully, quite comfortable from the start. Patrick eats well and enjoys lots of pets as does Pansy. The only thing that disturbs them is the sound of aluminum foil being ripped from the box. That makes them run!

“I am really lucky to have found these two wonderful cats who are both sweet and loving. I think they came from a good home.”
