As we close out National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, we want to take a moment to recognize the incredible team that keeps the SPCA of Southwest Michigan running strong every single day.

Our shelter stays clean, organized, and full of love because of these amazing people — the ones who show up early, stay late, and pour their hearts into caring for every animal that comes through our doors. From feeding and cleaning, to walking dogs, cuddling cats, and finding forever homes — their dedication makes all the difference.

We’re so grateful for the compassion, hard work, and love our staff bring to the shelter each and every day. You make the SPCA of Southwest Michigan a safe and happy place for so many animals — and for that, we thank you. 💕🐶🐱

Thinking of our fire department today.

This morning, we lost Firefighter Charlie Sullivan in a motorcycle accident in Kalamazoo. Charlie was a valued member of our department, a skilled firefighter, a loyal friend, and someone we could always rely on. His humor, pride in the job, and steady presence touched us all.

Please take care of yourselves and each other, let’s honor Charlie in how we carry ourselves forward.

Come and Meet Cal!🐕

This five-month-old bundle of joy is as sweet and loving as they come. Cal is an affectionate pup who wants nothing more than to be close to his people. Whether he’s following you around with his curious eyes or wiggling with excitement when you walk through the door, Cal’s gentle heart shines through every moment. 💫

Like many young dogs, Cal is still figuring out the world. He can be a little jumpy or mouthy when he’s excited, but it’s all part of his playful puppy personality—and with continued guidance, he’ll grow into a polite and well-mannered young dog. Cal already knows “sit,” and he’s a smart learner who’s eager to please, especially when treats or praise are involved. 🐶🐾

Cal is happiest when he’s around people and loves soaking up attention. He enjoys getting outside to stretch his legs, chase a toy, or explore new sights and smells. He’s still working on his leash manners, but his enthusiasm and willingness to learn make him a great candidate for continued training. When it comes to other dogs, Cal shows friendly interest—he may hang back a little until he feels comfortable, but once he does, his playful side comes out in full swing.🌟

You can meet Cal and our other available animals any time during our open hours: Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cal's adoption fee is $280.

At 6 years old, this gorgeous girl knows exactly what she wants: a cozy home where she can rule as the one and only queen. 👑🐱

Frannie is a total people-lover — she adores cuddles, attention, and will happily chat with you while you hand over her favorite treats (especially wet food!). She’s not a fan of sharing her throne with other cats, so she’s looking for a kingdom that’s all hers.

Here's Karma, our 4-year-old Doberman/Husky mix who’s ready to trick… or better yet, treat you with endless love! 🐾💖 This 48-lb sweetie is full of energy and loves to run and play—watch her little bobtail bounce as she dashes along, looking just like a joyful little deer! 🦌✨

Karma is always smiling and she is super attentive to people, though she’s still learning her leash manners. She’s not a fan of other dogs, but she’ll shower you with affection all day long!
