Let’s talk about FIP – Feline Infectious Peritonitis
After a short break from treating FIP cases at Kzoo Cat Cafe and Rescue, we noticed that foster kitten of the Tea litter, Bergamot, had a swollen belly, was less playful, and not eating as much. One of our incredible vets did an ultrasound and found her organs floating in fluid— all classic signs of wet FIP. The fluid was pulled for confirmation of what we suspected and we were unfortunately right 😢
FIP used to be a certain death sentence. But now—thanks to emerging treatment options—it’s treatable through a few licensed compounding pharmacies with your vet’s prescription. And we’re going to fight for Bergie!!
But that’s not all—
Bergie, her mama and all her littermates also tested positive for Feline Leukemia (FeLV). These guys were rescued from Kalamazoo’s Vine neighborhood, where the stray and unfixed cat population is in full-blown crisis. This happened because her mama, sweet Chamomile was also either born with it due to its easily transmittable nature, or she received it from one of the neighborhood tom cats.
Because of this, we’ve now had ‼️10 cats‼️ test positive for FeLV this year alone. It’s devastating—but it's also why your support matters more than ever.
💡 What is Feline Leukemia?
FeLV is a virus that suppresses the immune system, making cats more vulnerable to other infections and illnesses. It’s spread through close contact (grooming, nursing, bite wounds). Kittens are especially vulnerable—but some can “clear” the virus as their immune systems develop. We’ll be retesting Bergie and her siblings when they’re older, hoping for a miracle.
Adult cats who test positive may:
🐾Have an active infection, which can shorten their lifespan or increase their risk of illness
🐾Be regressively infected, meaning the virus is dormant in their body and they may never develop symptoms or spread the virus
🐾Rarely, test positive due to a false result, especially if recently vaccinated or exposed
Some FeLV+ cats live many healthy, happy years. They can make amazing companions! But because FeLV is contagious to other cats (but not humans or other species), we must house positive cats separately, provide extra vet care, and often struggle to find adopters.
BUT - We’re very lucky to have an incredible partnership with Froggie's Pond —a loving sanctuary specifically for Feline Leukemia-positive cats. When space allows, they welcome FeLV+ kitties who need long-term care and a safe place to thrive 💚 This partnership gives FeLV+ cats a chance at the quality of life they deserve—even when they can't be adopted into multi-cat homes 🐾
Bergamot is the most shy of her siblings, preferring snuggling with one of her siblings rather than receiving affection from her foster parents. She could be enticed by one of the feather toys to come out and play. Bergamot is also an avid fan of churus and wet food in general, and would smack her siblings away from her portion 😜
So - PLEASE like, comment and share her story to help get the word out, and donate if you are able! Can you spare $5 this ?
