🎉🐾 Double love, double celebration! 🐾🎉

This past Saturday, two of our special patients — Duncan and Dixie — celebrated their 10th birthday! Yesterday, they stopped by Southwest Animal Hospital to visit the staff and share this milestone. 💕

Duncan and Dixie share an incredible story. Born as littermates, both were diagnosed with megaesophagus (ME)— a condition where the esophagus is enlarged and has trouble moving food into the stomach. Out of their litter of five, four puppies faced this challenge.

✨ Duncan’s journey began when his original owners planned to put him down due to his condition. Thankfully, he was rescued by Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah, where his loving family found him. A few months later, Dixie was rescued for a second time by BAM (Because Animals Matter). Duncan and his parents drove back to Utah to bring Dixie home too. Reunited, these two have been inseparable ever since.

Life with megaesophagus isn’t easy. Duncan and Dixie have bravely battled regurgitation and aspiration pneumonia multiple times, and even routine medical procedures require special care. Yet, with the dedication of their family and their fighting spirit, they’ve lived an amazing 10 years together — full of love, resilience, and joy. 💖

With megaesophagus, the esophagus loses its ability to push food into the stomach. Dogs need to eat in an upright position (with a special “Bailey chair”) to let gravity move food to their stomach
