Did you know pets can get sunburned too? Just like humans, dogs and cats can suffer from painful sun damage — especially pets with light-colored fur, thin coats, pink skin, or exposed areas like the nose, ears, and belly.

Too much sun exposure can lead to redness, irritation, peeling skin, and even increase the risk of skin cancer over time.

Here are a few ways to help protect your pet this summer:
☀️ Limit outdoor time during peak afternoon heat
☀️ Provide shade and fresh water outdoors
☀️ Ask your veterinarian about pet-safe sunscreen
☀️ Avoid shaving double-coated breeds too short

If you notice redness, sensitivity, or skin changes, schedule an exam with your veterinarian. Summer safety starts with prevention!

The reason ticks are so hard to eliminate comes down to their life cycle. With four stages that can take up to three years to complete and thousands of eggs laid in the environment at a time, removing one tick from your dog is just the beginning. Prevention is what keeps the cycle from starting in the first place. Talk to us about the best approach at your next visit. 🐾🌿

🦊 A quick reminder 🦊

Last week, one of our team members encountered a fox displaying unusual behavior right on her front porch. While we may never know exactly what was wrong, it serves as an important reminder that rabies remains a concern in our community.

The best protection for your pets is keeping their rabies vaccination up to date.

Not sure if your pet is current? Give us a call! We’d be happy to review their records and help schedule an appointment if needed.

There’s a lot of misinformation online about removing ticks safely. Some common “home remedies” can actually increase the risk of disease transmission.

🚫 Myth: Burn the tick with a match
🚫 Myth: Cover the tick in petroleum jelly
🚫 Myth: Twist the tick out with your fingers

✔️ Instead, use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool to grasp the tick close to the skin and pull steadily upward.

After removal:
✔️ Clean the area
✔️ Wash your hands
✔️ Monitor for redness, swelling, or illness symptoms

If you’re unsure how to remove a tick safely, contact your veterinary team for guidance.

Food and skin health are more connected in dogs than most people realize. When a dog's skin just won't settle down and there's more than a seasonal pattern to it, diet is often the first place we look. Ruling out a food allergy before exploring environmental triggers can make a real difference in finding the right answer. If your dog's skin has been an ongoing concern, schedule a consultation with us. 🐾🌿

We’re excited to share that Dr. Kayleen Hammer will be joining our team 🐾

Originally from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Dr. Hammer earned her degree in Animal Science and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University. During her studies, she had the opportunity to travel to Thailand and assist with veterinary work on rescued Asian elephants.

Her passion for veterinary medicine was shaped early on through a special connection with a therapy dog during a hospital stay. This experience continues to inspire her dedication to strengthening the human animal bond each day.

Dr. Hammer’s veterinary interests include
• Internal medicine
• Pain management

Outside of the clinic, she enjoys hiking, crafting, and taking weekend trips to the beach and the mountains. She also enjoys pushing her cats in strollers around her neighborhood.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Hammer 💙

Spring is the perfect time to reset your pet’s health routine and make sure they’re protected for the months ahead.

At Hambright Animal Hospital, we recommend a spring wellness check to catch potential health issues early and keep your pet feeling their best.

Your pet’s spring checklist should include:
✔ Annual wellness exam
✔ Updated vaccinations
✔ Flea, tick, and heartworm prevention
✔ Parasite screening
✔ Nutritional and weight evaluation

Seasonal changes can bring increased exposure to parasites, allergens, and outdoor hazards—making preventive care more important than ever.

📍 Schedule your pet’s spring wellness visit today.
