Before giving your dog an antihistamine like Benadryl®*, consider this:Allergies work differently in dogs than they do in people. When humans experience allergies, histamines are released in the body. In dogs, however, allergies release a protein called cytokines (a type of inflammation-regulator). These cause different symptoms in dogs with allergies, including itchy skin. Note that if your dog has underlying allergy issues, antihistamines like Benadryl® cannot control the cytokines that cause inflammation and itch. In fact, the International Committee on Allergic Diseases of Animals lists antihistamines under "Interventions likely to be of little or no benefit to treat acute flares of canine atopic dermatitis.” These meds can also cause concerning side effects like trembling, sedation, or panting if inaccurate dosages are given.

For a deep dive on antihistamines and how they impact dogs, visit our website here: https://www.thrivepetcare.com/thrive-guide/can-antihistamines-control-dog-itching

Did you know that itching and skin problems are the #1 reason for a vet visit around the world? 🗺 It makes sense when you think about how easy it is to spot – your dog continuously scratching in discomfort is bound to make you want to find a solution, fast! When you book a visit, your veterinary team will help get to the root of your pet’s itchiness. Be ready to have the answers for common questions that will help your team identify potential solutions, such as:

📋 Does their itching get worse at certain times of the year or in specific environments?
📋 Are they scratching all over, or just certain areas?
📋 When was their last dose of flea/tick preventative, and what kind was it?
📋 Are any other pets or people in your home itchy?
📋 What pet food, treats, and supplements do you give your dog?

Your vet will use these answers alongside a review of your pet’s medical history and a thorough physical exam to determine the culprit and offer solutions that best suit your pet’s needs. Think your pet may have allergies? While seasonal scratching suggests environmental allergies, there are other causes of skin irritation that may impact your pet year-round. Constant scratching, itching, or paw-chewing could be signs of an allergy. Types of allergies include:

🌻 Environmental Inhalant: During spring and summer, allergens like pollen and mold are prevalent. More time outside means greater exposure for your allergic pet. Additionally, there are allergens your pet can breathe in year-round like dust and human dander; symptoms will not be seasonal in those cases.

🧼 Environmental Contact: With these allergies, skin irritation usually happens at “contact points” (which are the places where the animal directly touches the allergen). The culprit could be a new shampoo, fragrance, carpet or floor cleaner.

🍲 Food: If your pet is experiencing recurrent ear or skin infections, it’s worth investigating a potential food allergy with your veterinarian. A food allergy is not always the result of eating something new. In fact, your pet can develop an allergy to foods they’ve eaten for years! The way to determine a food allergy is by performing a food trial. These take time and commitment but the long-term benefits to your pet’s health and well-being are worth exploring with your vet.

We're back with more of our top summer safety tips for pet owners to keep in mind during the hottest month of the year!💦

Avoid Overheating: Stay indoors during extreme heat and limit time in direct sun when outdoors

07/21/2023

As we head into the warmest time of the year, it means the summer vacation season is officially here! Whether you’re hitting the road, spending time in the great outdoors, or sticking close to home, here are our top summer safety tips:

Microchip Your Pet:
Summer brings thunderstorms, fireworks, and more time outside, each of which could result in an escape. Having a microchip that is registered with your up-to-date contact info can get your pet back to you as quickly as possible. Not sure if it your pet’s chip is registered? Make an appointment for an exam and chip check. Your vet can help register it!

Safely Walk Your Pet:
Short walks are key in the hot weather. Aim for early morning or late evening for cooler temps and think about their feet, too. Hot pavement can cause burns and blisters – if you can’t walk barefoot, neither should they! Check their paws routinely and choose grassy surfaces instead of pavement when possible.

Traveling With Your Pet:
Even if it’s just a quick trip to the store, it’s important to never leave a pet unattended in a car. Even with the window cracked, the heat can reach over 100⁰ F in just ten minutes. FYI: It’s even illegal in many municipalities to leave an animal unattended.

Beware of Bugs:
Does the sound of buzzing mosquitoes keep you inside? They’re not just annoying - those pests, along with ticks and fleas, spread diseases to pets. Use pet-safe bug repellent and ask your vet what formulation is safest and will provide the best protection.

Renal disease is a condition that occurs commonly in dogs and cats. Renal disease refers to the process where the kidneys or urinary system components have become compromised or have difficulty functioning at their full capacity. However, most commonly it’s the kidneys that become affected. Renal failure can progress quickly and be fatal, if left undiagnosed or untreated.

This is where the importance of lab work comes in: by monitoring renal levels on blood and urine testing, veterinary professionals can identify kidney changes faster, leading to early intervention.

Renal disease is irreversible, but treatment options exist that can help pets with this condition live longer, healthier lives. If your senior pet is past due for a screening, book a visit today. Read up on renal disease here: https://www.thrivepetcare.com/thrive-guide/renal-disease-and-the-importance-of-prescreening

Did these flea and tick facts surprise you? It’s hard for your pet to thrive while suffering from a parasite infestation.
In addition to causing itchy skin, fleas can infect humans and pets with diseases like tapeworm, cat-scratch fever, and the plague (yes, it’s still a thing and on the rise!). Ticks carry several diseases that can cause serious health problems for your
pet, such as Lyme Disease, Ehrlichiosis, and more.

Luckily, prevention has never been easier - your primary care veterinarian can recommend a variety of preventive flea and tick medications, depending on your pet’s unique needs and your family’s lifestyle. Talk to your veterinarian about your
pet's options and get them the protection they need today.

Today was a brutally difficult day for me and my husband. Our dearest companion and family member did not have any quality of life. Despite a healthy strong heart he was just in too much pain and we lovingly decided to let him go. We cried and cried but knew this was best for our dear Beau. It was a relief that we could come to a place that knew him well. Everyone was so caring. Thank you for helping our family and helping Beau end his life with dignity and love. Here are a few of my favorite pictures of this dear creature.
I was told to contact your facility because you would be a good source of information regarding adopting a pet and may be able to provide some feedback. I'm looking for an English Cocker Spaniel or a Cavapoo to adopt for my own. Please message me if you have any information as to whether or not any such breed might be near the Hudson area. Thank you! :)

We have been advised of a COVID positive exposure for our medical staff. The hospital will be closed until Monday so that we can deep clean the facility and follow state guidelines and keep our staff and clients safe. Thankfully, there were no possible client exposures in this instance.

If you have an appointment scheduled in the next four days, staff will be reaching out to you to reschedule your appointment. If your pet is ill and cannot wait to be seen, please contact our sister hospitals Clark Veterinary Hospital, Billerica Veterinary Hospital, or Hudson Animal Hospital. If your pet is having a life-threatening emergency, please bring them to Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital or Bulger Veterinary Hospital.

Our dog daycare will be closed until Monday. If you have a pet boarding with us over the weekend, there will be boarding staff here to care for them.
