Urgent need: Please consider donating to help our local rabbit rescue groups safely and affordably spay/ neuter the hundreds of rabbits that are lucky enough to hop through their programs each year. Rabbits require extra precautions to keep them safe under anesthesia making routine spay/neuter surgeries slightly more complicated than dogs/cats. The Spay it Forward program at Columbus Humane is the first of its kind offering high quality/low cost surgery for these rescued rabbits. Your donation allows IV catheters, tracheal intubation and all the comprehensive medications geared toward keeping them safe and comfortable before, during and after surgery. Another benefit of this program are the many Ohio State The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine veterinary students that are donating their time to observe and learn from the very best local, bunny savvy veterinarians and licensed technicians. Teaching the next generation is essential to creating more bunny savvy vets for the future, (there is not a formal exotic program in their curriculum). Please share!

Next in our education series with interesting bunny cases is Nesta. This young sweet lop eared girl was found as a stray. Given her shocking appearance (see before picture in comments) it’s astounding that she survived long outside. She could barely see due to severe eye discharge and infection. Thanks to the amazing volunteers at the Ohio House Rabbit Rescue we were able to do a sedated exam. Once we assessed her wounds it appeared this was all secondary to an eye infection. Her vision was actually unharmed. We were able to clean her wounds under sedation and flush her tear ducts. Laser therapy was used for pain and to help fast track her healing. A round of antibiotics and some TLC with a temporary foster family and she is fully healed and ready for her forever home. Contact OHRR if interested in adopting this sweet baby.

Meet Cadbury, the sweetest (big) girl that I met yesterday at the Ohio House Rabbit Rescue. Found as a stray, we quickly realized that she was paralyzed and unable to urinate on her own. Thanks to the quick actions of the rescue group, we assessed her injuries and found a severely displaced fracture of her lower spine. Due to her size (8 pounds) and degree of pain she was in we made the hardest decision ever to humanely euthanize her. I’ve been involved with many special needs buns including paralyzed buns but it was clear that she would never be able to have the quality of life she deserved.

Making a decision to euthanize takes its toll on everyone. We found out after the fact that the owner of this bunny may have released her because she “grew out of her cage”. I would love the opportunity to educate anyone who ever questions or considers releasing a domestic rabbit and thinking this is a safe option. Cadbury most likely injured her own back by running away from something scary like being chased by another animal, car etc.

Please spread the word that there are much safer options for animals that need new homes. Releasing them often has fatal consequences like it did for this sweet girl.
