Please be aware and now is a good time to ensure your animals are up to date on their rabies vaccine. Rabies is 100 percent fatal once clinical signs appear. Both people and animals are at risk if they come into contact with a rabid animal.
Signs to be alert for:
Not every animal shows all of these:
* Sudden behavior change (friendly wild animal, unusually aggressive pet)
* Excessive drooling or difficulty swallowing
* Biting at objects, self-mutilation, or unprovoked aggression
* Extreme fearfulness or unusual tameness
* Staggering, weakness, incoordination (ataxia)
* Paralysis, especially of the throat, jaw, or hind limbs
* Changes in vocalization (hoarse bark, altered meow, abnormal sounds)
* Seizures
* Death within days of clinical signs appearing
In dogs and cats, rabies can present as either:
* Furious form: aggression, agitation, hyperexcitability
* Paralytic (dumb) form: weakness, dropped jaw, inability to swallow, progressive paralysis
If you see an animal that you are concerned about; do not approach! Call animal control!
When outside with your pet please supervise and limit contact with wild animals.
