Thanksgiving Hours 🦃❤️
We will be closing today at 4:00 PM for Thanksgiving so our team can enjoy the holiday with their families.
We will reopen on Friday, Nomember 28th at 10:00 AM.

REMEMBER: Just like our friend Mason — even if your pet is giving their best “please share the turkey” face 😋 — most holiday foods aren’t safe for pets. Stick to pet-friendly treats only, even if those pleading eyes are extra convincing! 🐾

Have a safe and happy holiday, everyone! 🧡

Hey friends! Anyone else think it’s getting kind of cold out there?🙋🏻‍♀️
While you can pretty easily let people know when you’re cold, your pet might have a bit of a harder time doing so. Especially pets with short coats, like Miss Finley here, who loves to wear her Led Zeppelin hoodie when it’s cold out!
It’s not just short-haired breeds that get chilly, though. While some pets are built for colder weather, every animal will face their own challenges as the winter season approaches. Here’s how you can help them through it!
1. Limit time outside
Since they can’t say to you, ‘hey mom/dad, I’m getting cold’, you might have to keep an eye on that for them. Try shorter, more frequent walks as opposed to long walks in freezing temperatures. If you have a small breed or an older animal, consider possibly carrying them outside to use the restroom to protect their paws.
2. Learn to recognize frostbite
Frostbite typically affects the less protected parts of your furry friends’ bodies, such as ears, nose, tail, and paws. Watch for signs like shivering, discoloration, swelling, and pain responses when touching the affected area. (Note – never use hot water to treat frostbite, and always contact your vet to assess the damage and ensure your pet’s safety!)
3. Learn to recognize hypothermia
Hypothermia is the more widespread and more dangerous cousin of frostbite. This is when your pet’s body temperature drops below what’s appropriate. It can be life-threatening if left untreated. Pale or cool skin, shivering, and weakness are all signs. This might later turn into lethargy, confusion, shallow breathing, and a slowed heart rate. If you believe your pet is hypothermic, you can take them inside and wrap them in warm blankets and/or use warm (again, not hot!) water bottles to help raise their temperature. Then, contact your veterinarian to figure out your next steps.
4. Dress to impress
Like Miss Finley pictured below, your pet might need a sweatshirt or coat to help protect them from the cold. You might also consider utilizing booties to help keep your pet’s paws protected. Not every pet is so keen on playing dress-up, though, so try introducing these things gradually to help them get used to it.
5. Winter-specific dangers
Antifreeze can have a sweet smell that may attract pets, so do your best to keep it up and out of the way so as not to let them have access. If your pet gets hold of it, please contact your veterinarian right away. Also, watch out for ice, as it can be slippery for both you and your pet, as well as frozen lakes, which may break.
We love winter, and I’m sure you and your pet do, too! Remember to be cozy and careful to make the most of this season.else te thin

Our friend Canon is proudly supervising the latest donation for our Sweats for Vets drive 🐾💙 He gave this cozy sweatsuit his official “head-rest of approval” — which we think means they pass the comfort test! Donations can be dropped off at the clinic or shipped directly to us if that’s easier — every item makes a difference. We’re collecting items through December 19th, so there’s still plenty of time to make a donation!

A Fear Free 2020

What if a veterinary visit could be something you and your pet look forward to?

Fear Free veterinary medicine was a concept that was started in 2016 in response to concerns from veterinary professionals and owners alike about how their patients and pets were responding to basic medical care. Since then it has become one of the single most transformative initiatives in the history of companion animal practice, by focusing on the emotional well-being, enrichment, and the reduction of fear, anxiety and stress of our pets.

We at the Animal Health Clinic practice Fear Free methods on both our canine and feline patients. Why? Simple, because it’s better medicine. Stress slows the healing process. It skews results of blood test and vital sign readings. When pets are happy and calm instead of fearful, anxious, and stressed, the physical exam and blood chemistry yields better information.

When a pet is feeling stress, his or her owner’s level of stress will usually increase as well, which only serves to further increase the fear, anxiety, and stress in the pet. Fear has been shown to cause mental and physical illness in bother people and animals.
