Heaven at Home believes every pet should have access to proper care, especially as they enter old age and their medical needs compound.

The Herkemer Fund was created in loving memory of Heaven at Home founder Dr. Laurie Brush's loyal companion. Funds may be used to offset the cost of an at-home euthanasia visit for those on a restricted income, Hospice and Palliative care treatment costs, or aftercare, including body removal and cremation/aquamation.

Big news for senior pet families in our community. Dr. Laurie Brush of Heaven at Home Pet Hospice is one of the veterinarians helping the American College of Veterinary Hospice and Palliative Medicine (ACVHPM) become the first AVMA-recognized specialty organization dedicated to pet hospice and end-of-life care.

What would that mean? Rigorous, standardized training in:
• Advanced pain and symptom management
• Quality-of-life assessment for chronic and terminal illness
• Goals-of-care conversations
• Grief support for families

The same level of intentional, compassionate care we expect in human hospice — formally established for pets and the people who love them. The ACVHPM has been established. Now it needs official recognition by the AVMA — and you can help make that happen before the August 13 deadline.

If you spend any time at all out in tall grass this summer, remember to check yourself and your pets for ticks! Experts are predicting that tick activity in Michigan will be exceptionally high this year. While we often see statistics about human infections of Lyme disease, for pets, the number is almost certainly much higher.

Lyme disease can be contracted through the bite of an infected black-legged tick. "The most serious risk is when Lyme disease is not diagnosed immediately and has time to infiltrate the system, causing chronic kidney, heart, or neurologic problems. Irreversible kidney failure is fatal," said Dr. Laurie Brush, founder of Heaven at Home Pet Hospice.

Heaven at Home Pet Hospice extends our deepest sympathies to Michelle and her family for the passing of their beloved dog, Leaf. We love hearing cherished stories and memories about the pets we help pass peacefully. Here's a little bit of what Michelle shared with us about him:

"In the weeks before you died, your mama and I began to barter with death — asking her over and over again if she could wait another day. But she kept insisting in all sorts of ways that the time had come, and you just had to go.

"Dr. Katie offered kindness, compassion, and care during Leaf's euthanasia appointment. We are grateful to have had her serve as Leaf's death steward."

Veterinary medicine has many specialties, but there is currently no AVMA-recognized specialty dedicated to end-of-life care.

Dr. Laurie Brush is a part of a national group of veterinarians with the aim of changing that. They're working to establish the American College of Veterinary Hospice and Palliative Medicine (ACVHPM) as the first formally recognized specialty in pet hospice and end-of-life care.

Heaven at Home will be rolling out specific ways pet parents can support the recognition of ACVHPM in the weeks ahead — from sharing the story to signing on as public supporters of the effort.
