As a busy, small clinic, our appointment schedule fills quickly. Booking your pet when you first notice a concern gives us the best chance to see them promptly. If you wait until the issue becomes an emergency, we may not always be able to fit your pet into our schedule that day, which could mean a longer wait for care or a visit to an emergency hospital.

☀️Safe Summer Fun

Summer means more hikes, lakes, campgrounds, dog parks, boarding facilities, and outdoor adventures—but it also means increased exposure to dangerous and potentially life-threatening diseases.
Help protect your dog by staying up to date on these important vaccines:

💉 Rabies – Rabies is a fatal viral disease that affects the brain and nervous system. Once symptoms appear, there is no effective treatment. It is spread through the bite of infected wildlife and can also be transmitted to humans. Vaccination is not only lifesaving—it is required by law in most areas.

💉 DAPP – Protects against distemper, a highly contagious virus that attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems and is often fatal; parvovirus, which causes severe vomiting, bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and can quickly become deadly—especially in puppies; along with adenovirus and parainfluenza.

💉 Leptospirosis – Protects against bacteria spread through contaminated water, soil, and wildlife urine. Leptospirosis can cause sudden kidney and liver failure, will require hospitalization, and can also be transmitted to people and can be fatal.
💉 Lyme – Helps prevent Lyme disease, which is spread by ticks and can lead to painful joints, fever, lethargy, kidney damage, and long-term health complications.

💉 Bordetella – Helps protect against kennel cough, a highly contagious respiratory infection that spreads rapidly anywhere dogs gather. While often mild, it can develop into severe pneumonia in puppies, senior dogs, or dogs with weakened immune systems.

💉 Canine Influenza – Helps protect against dog flu, a highly contagious respiratory virus that can spread quickly through boarding facilities, daycare, grooming salons, and dog parks. Some dogs develop severe pneumonia requiring intensive medical care.

Vaccinations are recommended based on pet’s overall health and life-style. Discuss with your veterinarian.

Prevention is always safer, easier, and far less expensive than treating these diseases.

EXCITING GIVING OPPORTUNITY
While all of us animal lovers are aware of the emotional bond between people and their pets, we don’t always stop to think about what that bond can mean when it’s all you have. Often when people escape domestic violence situations, there is not time for planning or getting together many belongings and while there are programs in place through local police departments and non-profit organizations to help with the needs of adults and children in those situations, up until now there have been no local resources available when pets are involved. Because we believe this is a need we, in the animal care world, are uniquely equipped to help with, we are so excited to be joining up with Tala's Closet at their new Grand Rapids location where people fleeing domestic violence with their pets will be able to get emergency supplies. These supplies include collars, leashes, food bowls, toys, beds, litterboxes and litter. And that is where we are hoping your support might come in. We will be looking for donations (monetary or physical items on the Wishlist) to stock the Pet Closet. This is a project that we believe has the ability to make a huge positive impact on our community and we are so excited to see how it blesses others both through the giving and receiving.
Items should be new or gently used and can be dropped off at Jelsema Veterinary Clinic 3510 Chicago Drive in Hudsonville Mon-Thur 8-7 and Fri 8-5.

🐾 Maggie Needs a Home! 🐾

Sweet Maggie is a 5-year-old terrier mix (about 14 lbs) looking for her forever family. She recently visited our clinic for her spay surgery and vaccines and was such a good girl—sweet with everyone and handled everything like a champ.

She has a super loving personality, lots of energy, and truly loves people. Maggie does great with kids and cats, but she’s had some issues with the other dogs in her current home, so she may do best as the only dog.

She was just spayed, is up to date on vaccines (will need boosters in a few weeks), and will come with her crate, bowl, and a bag of food.
