Even in winter, heartworm disease can still be spread because mosquitoes—the carriers of heartworm larvae—can survive in sheltered or heated environments. While cold outdoor temperatures slow them down, they often persist inside garages, barns, homes, and other warm areas where pets may be exposed. On those unseasonably warm winter days, even a brief temperature spike can bring them buzzing back to life. All it takes is one infected mosquito to transmit heartworm larvae, which is why year-round prevention is so important. Think of it like keeping your pet on Santa’s “nice list” of healthy habits—consistent protection ensures that while you’re hanging stockings and sipping cocoa, your pet stays safe from unwelcome, Grinch-like pests trying to ruin the season.
