Remember when we told you that High Country Humane is way over capacity?? We couldn't stop thinking about all those animals, not to mention the staff who are caring for them, so we decided we needed to do more to help!

There are other ways to help if you are unable to foster or adopt right now! We are holding a Donation Drive for supplies to be given to HCH. Stop by to drop off items, or bring them with you to your appointment.

At Westside Vet, we believe there is always something to learn! Every week, our technician manager Christine puts together a short quiz for the staff, with a new topic for them to learn about. We want you to learn along with us!

This week’s Topic: Capnography and End Tidal CO2

When your pet is anesthetized for a procedure, we have a trained technician monitoring their status at all times. We use several different parameters to ensure we maintain them as close to homeostasis as possible.

End tidal CO2 tells us how much carbon dioxide is being breathed out with every exhale. If we notice the value increasing or decreasing, or a change in the waveform – also called a capnogram - we can make a number of adjustments to get it back to a normal range (around 40mmHg). This can include increasing or decreasing oxygen and anesthetic gas delivery, increasing or decreasing the IV fluid rate, or even adjusting positioning of the breathing tube.

The image below shows what we see while monitoring, and all of those values paint us a picture of how stable the patient is throughout the procedure.
