I’ve spent a lot of time under bulls lately. Let’s talk about why- Bovine Trichomoniasis, aka Trich. We can test our way out of this with time and good herd records. Give me a call if you’d like to talk through your risks and options: 928-396-2060

Some not so fun facts:

**Trich in Northern Arizona Range Cattle**

**Risk:** Trich is endemic in Arizona. Large open range and unintentional co-mingling make it hard to control. Infected bulls show no signs and stay infected for life. Cows clear it but lose the pregnancy first, which delays conception 30–90 days.

**Cost:** Calf crop losses can reach 50%. Lost genetics: Culling cows and bulls can wipe out priceless generations of breeding decisions in the cow herd.

**Testing (AZ rules):**
• Official test is an individual PCR, done by an accredited vet. Cultures and pooled PCRs are not official.
• Required for all bulls 12 months and older before import or change of ownership.
• Results are valid 30 days for import and 60 days for in-state sale, with the bull kept isolated from females.
• Test before and after each breeding season. PCR can still miss positives.

**Short-term (positive herd):**
• Isolate all bulls and notify neighbors.
• Positive bulls go to slaughter or a restricted feeding pen within 30 days.
• About 97% of cows clear it in 3–5 heat cycles. About 3% become carriers. There is no treatment.

**Long-term:**
• Buy only tested bulls. Test-and-cull is the most effective control.
• Coordinate testing and fence upkeep with allotment partners.
• Vaccination may reduce losses where exposure can't be avoided.

This abscess was as big as the calf’s head. What a relief to evacuate all of the pus! Who feels better? The pimple popper addicts or the calf? We all win

I won’t name names (you know who you are 🤣 ) but someone commented on how rugged my hands looked today. Well, when I curled up next to Tilly here she made me feel so dainty and feminine in comparison that I no longer smelled myself or noticed all the dirt under my fingernails.

Beautiful creatures in beautiful places. We’ve got shiny coats, good body condition, and a uniform calf crop. This ranch optimizes nutrition, herd health, and production management year round, and it pays off big time on shipping day.

This land is for all creatures great and small. Share the road. Share the water, the air, the vegetation.

The staff and volunteers of HCH are absolutely amazing. I’m just happy my patients let me pet them for once…sort of.
