It is Fun Fact Friday! Calls come in regularly regarding rattlesnakes, so let's look at our local rattlesnake species in Flagstaff. Yes, we have rattlesnakes! There are 2 species common to the area, the Arizona Black Rattlesnake, pictures 1 and 2 are photos of the adult and juveniles, which can look very different. Picture 3 is of the Prairie or Hopi Rattlesnake. Both species can grow to 3 feet long and are commonly found around oaks, boulders and fallen logs. They rarely bite unless disturbed, so human bites are rare. Dogs, however, like to investigate everything so be cautious when walking your dogs! Typical bite areas are nose and legs, look for sudden swelling, heavy panting, drooling, vomiting. If you suspect your dog was bitten, seek veterinary care right away!
