Does your dog love the snow? Many of us have dogs with long hair or a double coat (Huskies, Chow Chows, and St. Bernards, just to name a few), and they love to be outside in the snow. Though they have hair to keep their bodies warm, we need to keep their feet safe. If there is ice outside where you intend on taking your dog/s, there are a couple things to keep in mind.

Ice can cut their pads which is painful. (Have you ever been cut by ice? It hurts!) They also don’t have a way to keep their feet warm. If you notice your dog holding their feet up and alternating paws, you need to get them inside right away. They are telling you their paws are freezing. (Imagine you standing outside in the cold conditions with bare feet!) An alternate solution is doggie booties if you will be outside for long periods of time with your pet.

Is your dog constantly sticking their paws in their ears and digging them? Pick up that floppy ear and take a sniff. Does it smell bad? If the answer is yes, your dog could have a bacterial infection, yeast infection, or even mites. If you are a pet parent that is a do it yourselfer, get out the ear wash and clean those ears. If you need help cleaning your furry friend's ears, call and set an appointment. Unfortunately, these issues will not go away without intervention, and the longer they are left unattended, the worse they get. Antibiotic ear drops may also be prescribed by your veterinarian to help shorten the duration of the infection.

Have you noticed your pet is becoming an eating machine? With fall upon us and winter right around the corner, our pets' hunger is increasing. Don't be alarmed or ignore what is apparent. As it gets colder, especially heading into the winter months, our pets need more food for the energy to keep them warm. They also need to build up a thin layer of fat that also helps keep them warm. Just like us, their nutritional needs change just as ours do when the weather changes. Providing good healthy food for your pets should be a top priority. If you have questions or concerns regarding your pet's diet, we'd love to help. Contact us today to schedule an appointment.

Thanksgiving Safety Tips

Thanksgiving is just a couple days away! Check out these tips for enjoying a safe holiday with your furry family members.

Thanksgiving is a time for friends, family and holiday feasts—but also a time for possible distress for our animal companions. Pets won’t be so thankful if they munch on undercooked turkey or a pet-unfriendly floral arrangement, or if they stumble upon an unattended alcoholic drink.

Do you think your pet is just getting lazy? Maybe you have a senior dog or a short-haired dog, and you are noticing they are not as eager to go on that evening walk or go outside as often. We humans often forget that if we need a jacket before walking out the door, maybe our pets need one, too. Older dogs require a bit more care when the seasons change, especially as it gets cooler. Short-haired dogs also need more care in late fall and through the winter. An appropriate weight doggie coat could solve your problems. In addition, consider taking them out for shorter periods of time but more frequently for exercise and that much-needed potty break.

November is National Pet Cancer Awareness Month and an excellent opportunity to familiarize yourself with the most common signs of cancer in companion animals:

🐾 Unexplained weight loss
🐾 Sores that won't heal
🐾 Refusal to eat
🐾 Decreased energy/lethargy
🐾 Difficulty breathing

If your pet exhibits any of these symptoms (or you have ANY other reason to suspect they are unwell), please schedule a checkup right away. In cases of serious illnesses like cancer, early detection and treatment ensure the best possible prognosis.

It’s Fall. That means the weather is changing and so is your pet's hair. Noticing it appears that there is more of your pet’s hair on your floors than on their body? It’s time for them to change their coats. You can help your furry friends by:

🐾 Brushing your pets will help get rid of all that loose hair that hasn't found its way to your floor.

🐾 Give your pet supplements and make sure they're getting the right nutrition. High protein helps keep their coats in good shape, and so does adding Omega-3 vitamins to their diet. (Ask your Veterinarian)

🐾 A monthly bath not only helps keep them clean but also helps get the loose hair out of their coat.
