While we are all outside enjoying the sun, having get-togethers and BBQ's there are some things to watch out for. Even a small amount of human foods can cause serious digestive issues resulting in diarrhea, vomiting, or even a serious illness called pancreatitis.

A few things you want to look out for when having your furry friend around are skewer sticks and corn cobs. Ingesting these can cause an obstruction that may require surgery to remove.

Also, keep pets from licking at a grill. The wires from wire brushes used to clean grills can fall off and if they are ingested they may become lodged at any point in your pet's digestive tract which will require surgery to remove.

Never leave a pet in a hot car. Since cars can heat up very quickly, even on a mild day, leaving your pet in a hot car can cause heat stroke and death in a very short period of time.

Studies show that the temperature of your car can increase about 10-20 degrees within the first 10 minutes. This varies depending on the type of car, where it is parked, and the time of day.

The interior heat of your car is influenced by many factors:
Exterior paint color
Interior upholstery color
Window tinting
Available shade
Direction parked
City where you are located

Unique breed feature!
Meet Petrie, a 7 month old Sphynx.
Here are some facts from Petrie's mom!
Sphynx cats need baths to remove oils and grime from their skin, but Petrie hates baths!

They have a natural body temperature that is about 4°F warmer than other cats. Petrie is the best snuggler!

Sphynx cats are known for being friendly and getting along well with people, children, and other pets. Petrie is usually the first to greet visitors and loves playing with my 1 year old niece!

Dental Health Awareness

Does your cat’s bad breath keep the two of you from snuggling, or do you wish you could give your dog a breath mint? This could be one of the first signs of developing dental disease.

Dental disease is a painful condition that occurs when bacteria, plaque, and tartar build up on the teeth and get trapped beneath the gumline. The bacteria can be absorbed into the bloodstream and have a negative effect on other major organs throughout the body.

Here we have a dental cleaning on a pup with a dental tartar grade 4/4.

12/18/2023

Here at Northwest Animal Care Hospital we are excited to offer a new pain relief medication for our canine patients. Librela is the first treatment of its kind to offer long term pain relief for dogs without the need for a daily treatment. Given via injection once a month by our team to your pet, it reduces pain associated with the signs of osteoarthritis.

What is Librela?

Librela is a monoclonal antibody given once a month that inhibits nerve growth factor (NGF) which is a key osteoarthritis pain mediator. By binding NGF, Librela reduces pain sensation for dogs, reduces neurogenic inflammation, and limits the release of additional NGF as well as other inflammatory mediators.

Is it safe?

Yes! Since Librela is a monoclonal antibody, it is processed in the same way other antibodies break down in the body. This requires little involvement for the liver or kidneys, making it an ideal medication for patients who are unable to take traditional anti-inflammatory medications. Most side effects noted in trials were involved with injection site reactions. After your pet starts on Librela, it will be important to monitor any changes in appetite, thirst, urination, or defecation. If you notice any of these changes, or any signs of reaction at the injection site, please notify your veterinary team right away.

Who can get Librela?

Any dog that is over 1 year of age and is not a breeding dog, pregnant, or lactating is eligible. Bloodwork may be recommended before starting your dog on Librela depending on other health conditions your pet may have.

Please call today to get an appointment scheduled!
