IN THE NEWS: IA - West Des Moines to move 2026 July Fourth fireworks display amid animal welfare concerns from local shelter

"West Des Moines will move its 2026 Fourth of July fireworks display to Jordan Creek Town Center, the city said in a release.

The decision comes as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, and city leaders received complaints regarding the proximity of the fireworks display to a local animal shelter. "

In 2020, West Des Moines moved the fireworks display to be close to City Hall due to "overcrowding and social distancing."

"Benton County Supervisors discussed Ordinance No. 80, Animal Protection and Control, Tuesday, the second consideration.

The ordinance would repeal ordinance No. 37.

County Attorney Ray Lough addressed issues that came up during the first consideration of the ordinance the week before, including the huge burden placed on law enforcement and options that don’t require the destruction of the animal."

IN THE NEWS: MO - KC Pet Project to transfer animal control duties to city of Kansas City

"By the end of July, KC Pet Project will no longer be overseeing animal control services throughout Kansas City, a spokesperson for the city announced on Tuesday.

Starting on July 30, the local shelter will pass the baton to the city’s Neighborhood Services Department, giving city administrators authority over metro-wide animal control operations under the newly established Animal Services Division. "

IN THE NEWS: IA - Des Moines woman faces animal neglect charges after 18 animals recovered from home

"A local woman is facing numerous animal neglect charges after over a dozen animals were seized from her north Des Moines residence.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office served an animal neglect search warrant at a mobile home in the 800 block of N.E. 46th Avenue Wednesday afternoon.

Deputies and Animal Rescue League of Iowa staff members recovered 18 animals from the property, according to a press release."

The animals suffered from a "serious flea infestation," with the suspect stating that most of them had not visited the vet in over a year.

"Animal welfare advocates across North Carolina are applauding a veto made by Governor Josh Stein on a piece of legislation that would have given more legal power to pet stores.

Last week, Governor Stein vetoed House Bill 96. The bill was originally intended to address squatters—which Stein said he supported—but a last-minute amendment included in the bill would have given more legal protections for pet stores that source from 'puppy mills.'"

"The city of West Des Moines will start looking for a contractor to take care of domesticated cats and newborn kittens separated from their mother, according to a release from the city.

In January, the shelter the city previously contracted with, AHeinz57 in De Soto, announced it would phase out its rescue and adoption program for cats due to a lack of resources. West Des Moines still contracts with AHeinz57 for dog adoptions. "

"About 60 pets have been relocated to Austin Pets Alive! following severe flooding in Kerr and Williamson counties over the last 24 hours.

APA! says it has been in Kerr County with a veterinary team helping to triage incoming animals impacted by the flooding.

The organization was able to completely clear out the Kerr County shelter, allowing them to house lost pets closer to home."

Austin Pets Alive! is asking for the public's help after the organization took in about 60 pets following severe flooding in Kerr and Williamson counties. It is also seeking assistance for Kerr and Williamson County shelters.

"The study shows that more than half of the breeders or brokers who supply retail stores with puppies, and who have been tracked over the past three years by the nonprofit organization Bailing Out Benji. have been cited for regulatory violations.

Mindi Callison, executive director of the Iowa-based nonprofit organization, says that for decades, there has been a lack of data surrounding the pet-acquisition industry — particularly with regard to the complicated intersection of breeders, brokers and sellers."

An Iowa-based animal welfare organization has studied regulatory violations among dog breeders who supply brokers and retailers with animals.
