Cats are incredibly good at hiding when something is wrong. By the time symptoms show up, care can quickly become more complex and expensive.

Some of the most common conditions we see in cats include:

-- Chronic kidney disease (CKD)
-- Hyperthyroidism
-- Chronic enteropathies (IBD)
-- Feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS)

These are serious conditions that often require long-term treatment, which is where pet insurance can be most useful. Starting a plan while your cat is young and healthy helps avoid pre-existing condition exclusions and typically keeps premiums more affordable over time.

If you’re exploring your options, Pawlicy is a helpful tool for comparing plans and finding the best coverage for you and your cat: https://www.pawlicy.com/cat-insurance/

Raw diet or kibble? It is one of the most common nutrition questions pet parents ask, and the answer is usually more nuanced than the internet makes it seem.

Some research has found that dogs fed raw diets showed slight improvements in overall clinical health scores, including skin, ear, and dental health. But those same dogs were also more likely to receive supplements, frequent bathing, and other wellness-focused care consistently. In other words, diet may matter, but it is rarely the only factor.

Our latest blog takes a look at the raw diet vs. kibble conversation, including potential benefits, food poisoning risks, and what pet parents should consider before making a major change.

Raw vs. kibble for dogs: what does the research actually show? Learn about the real risks, benefits, and what the experts recommend you feed your pup.

Some pets have a way of taking up a lot of real estate in your heart. Our May Pet of the Month, Dudley, is definitely one of them.

This 11-year-old pointer mix lives life with two priorities: finding something to chew on and snoring as loudly as possible on the nearest soft surface. According to his owner Nessa, Dudley also proudly holds the title of “garbage disposal in dog form.”

But Dudley’s story is also one of resilience. Since 2021, Dudley has been living with epilepsy. There was a time when his seizures became so frequent and severe that his family feared the worst.

Instead of accepting that outcome, Dr. Olson worked closely with Dudley’s family to keep searching for answers, adjusting medications and carefully building a treatment plan tailored specifically to him. Today, Dudley is still chewing, snoring, and making the most of every day.

In Nessa’s words:

“Because of Dr. Olson’s persistence, knowledge, and compassion, Dudley is still here with us — and doing so much better than we ever imagined during those dark moments. He has given me more time with Dudley, and that is a gift I will never be able to repay.”

Thank you, Dudley, for reminding us why we do what we do. And thank you to Nessa for trusting Dr. Olson with his care.

For many pet parents, remembering monthly flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives can be a challenge. New options like Bravecto Quantum (for fleas and ticks) and ProHeart 12 (for heartworm prevention) allow Dr. Olson to provide 12 months of protection with just a simple injection during your pet’s wellness visit.

A few things to know:

-- Bravecto Quantum provides year-round protection from fleas and ticks
-- ProHeart 12 provides year-round protection from heartworm disease
-- They are two separate injections, similar to how different vaccines protect against different diseases
-- Both help remove the risk of missed monthly doses

Heartworm disease is spread by mosquitoes and only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to transmit infection. With warm weather and insects common in Texas all year long, prevention is one of the most important parts of protecting your pet’s health.

If you’re interested in once-yearly prevention options, ask Dr. Olson at your pet’s next visit.

✨ Happy Toothsday! ✨

Did you know most dogs and cats develop dental disease by age 3? 🐾🦷

Dental disease is one of the most common—and most overlooked—conditions in pets.

Annual professional cleanings help prevent bad breath, mouth pain, and loose teeth, while early treatment keeps your pet comfortable and thriving.

We offer both preventative care and treatment for dental disease in dogs and cats—because comfort, health, and quality of life start with a clean mouth 🌟

Bringing plants into your home can do more than brighten up your space. Some indoor plants may actually support a healthier environment for both you and your pets by improving air quality, reducing household toxins, and creating a calmer indoor environment.

The key is choosing pet-safe varieties that won’t cause problems if your curious dog or cat decides to investigate. A few great pet-friendly options include:

-- Wheat Grass
-- Catnip
-- African Violet
-- Spider Plant
-- Chinese Money Tree

Our newest blog highlights five indoor plants (and some bonus mentions) that are both beautiful and safe to keep in a pet-friendly home. Read the full article here: www.dallasveterinaryconcierge.com/blog/indoor-plants-for-pet-health

Introducing our March Pet(s) of the Month: Zeus & Thor!

Some bonds are simply unbreakable, and these two are living proof. These 10.5-year-old Chihuahua littermates have been together their entire lives, doing everything side by side. They may be small, but their love for comfort is big. Their favorite place? Curled up on the couch with their owner, competing for the best lap spot.

A few fun facts about Zeus & Thor:

-- Their collective treat of choice is soft snacks — they may have fewer teeth than your average dog, but they are thriving nonetheless
-- Couch naps + lap hogging are their go-to activities, which seems like a pretty comfy life to us
-- "Opposites attract" is a perfect description of their personalities: one is bold, one is quiet, and they balance each other out perfectly

Their dad, Phil, shared why Dr. Olson and Dallas Veterinary Concierge mean so much to their family:

“Dr. D is great. He is very kind and gentle with the dogs. Zeus has some health issues, and Dr. D is quick to respond via text and flexible with home visits and medications. In the past, he even helped extend the life of another rescue I thought I would lose, giving her a full extra year of quality life.”

We’re honored to care for Zeus and Thor. Thank you, Phil, for trusting us with your fur babies!

Bonny is Dr. Olson’s Blue and Gold Macaw and a very special part of the DVC family. Hatched in 1999, she’s proof that birds can be lifelong companions.

Here are three quick facts about macaws:

-- They can live 60+ years
-- They “talk” to communicate and bond
-- They’re highly intelligent and emotional

Birds and other exotic pets have unique care needs, and we’re proud to care for them, too. Learn more about Bonny, and if you have an exotic pet of your own, we'd love to provide vet care for you!
