Did you know that heartworms are spread by mosquitoes which don’t die in the Texas "winter", so our pets are at risk of infection year round? Furthermore, heartworms can be fatal & there is a risk of death even with proper treatment. Prevention is easier, cheaper, & less stressful than treatment, so it is recommended you keep your dog on monthly preventatives such as Heartgard, Nexgard, Simparica Trio, Revolution, etc.

Did you know that dental care is the most common preventable disease in today's pets? The best way to improve dental health is to brush the teeth. Use a small dog toothbrush, canine toothbrush, or finger toothbrush & animal safe toothpaste such as C.E.T. Start by having them peanut butter (make sure xylitol isn’t listed as an ingredient), wet food, or treats off the toothbrush every day for a week, then apply the pet safe toothpaste & let them lick it off every day for a week. Finally, gently brush the teeth with the toothpaste. Brushing the inside & outside for 3 seconds on all sides 3× a week is more than enough. If your dog resists having their teeth brushed, dental cleanings can be performed under general anesthesia every few years as necessary for their teeth. Dental chews such as Greenies & Oravet can also help slow dental disease.

Our tip: Make a family evacuation plan and practice it with your pets to make sure you keep those you love safe from harm.

Happy Independence Day!

Dogs and cats have a much higher sense of hearing than us humans do. While we may hear fireworks as musical pops, our pets experience them with much higher intensity. 💥

As with thunder and lightning, the loud booms and flashes of fireworks are very unpredictable, causing confusion and fear for pets. Cats and dogs cannot understand what is happening when they hear fireworks which instinctually triggers their fight-or-flight response to unknown threats.

Here are some ways to prepare and comfort you pet during summer fireworks displays: https://www.thrivepetcare.com/thrive-guide/how-to-calm-pets-during-fireworks
