Vaccination for Leptospirosis is now considered to be essential for dogs. The Lepto vaccine was not considered to be a "core" vaccine for many years. The core vaccines are Rabies, Distemper, and Parvovirus. Lepto has now been added to this list due to the increasing number of cases seen nationwide. Leptospirosis is a disease that can cause liver and kidney failure in dogs. It is spread in the urine of other animals, particularly wild animals. In this area, the main culprits would be mice, rats, coyotes, foxes, skunks and bobcats. Water sources are frequently contaminated with urine from run off, and rain can increase exposures through puddling of water. Dogs who have not been vaccinated are given two boosters 3 weeks apart, then annually. Call us if you have any questions about your pet.
