Case Spotlight: Dental Disease & Systemic Risk 🦷❤️

A patient came in for a non-anesthetic dental where we found a tooth with pulp exposure—notice the dark area around the tooth (seen in the first X-ray), which is highlighted in the follow-up image.

A month later, the pet developed a heart murmur. Over time, it worsened, and an echocardiogram raised concerns for bacterial endocarditis—likely caused by oral bacteria entering the bloodstream.

After a full anesthetic dental and extractions, the murmur improved and eventually resolved.

📝 This case shows how dental disease can impact the whole body—routine dental care is more than just clean teeth!

Injury 👉 Recovery

Patient: This young pup presented with lameness in the left hindlimb sustained from a car accident. Radiographs (pictured here) revealed a femoral neck fracture. ❤️‍🩹

🦴Diagnosis: Left femoral neck fracture

🩺Treatment: The owner was presented with two options—amputation or femoral head and neck osteotomy (FHO). Due to Manchitas’ young age and overall health, FHO was selected to preserve limb function.

🪡Surgery: An FHO was performed, removing the femoral head and neck to promote the formation of a false joint and relieve pain.

💪Recovery: Postoperative care focused on early, controlled activity to maintain muscle mass, encourage limb use, and restore mobility. Physical rehab was gradually increased over several weeks.

✅ Outcome: Manchitas made a full recovery and has returned to normal activity with excellent long-term mobility.

Swipe through this eye injury journey 👁🐾🧼

This pup, Ralph, came in after a grooming appointment—he held his eye shut and his owner suspected he may have gotten soap in it. During the exam, Dr. Henry used a fluorescein stain to detect a large superficial corneal ulcer present in his left eye. After one steroid drop, 5 days of pain meds, and eye drops every 4–6 hours… his eye was fully healed at recheck! 💉

In people, we might toss in some drops and move on—but in dogs, even minor eye injuries can escalate quickly. If their eye is bothering them, they might rub it on the carpet or a towel, or paw at it, which can make the injury much worse.
