HART of Maine

HART of Maine Welcome to the official HART of Maine page! We are a no-kill adoption center & shelter for cats. Our shelter building was constructed in 2004.
(302)

HART is a NO KILL shelter and adoption center for cats - a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation licensed by the State of Maine. We are a member of the American Humane Association, the American Partnership for Pets and the New England Federation of Humane Societies. HART is staffed mostly by volunteers who are dedicated to the well being of the shelter residents. We care for pets that would otherwise be

out on the street, assuring their safety, health, and comfort. It was custom designed for cat sheltering and offers our residents an open environment, with climbing structures and lots of comfy beds. This environment allows the cats the freedom to play, nest, and hide, as well as form bonds with one another. All of our animals receive lots of love and attention, as well as expert veterinary care.

You simply must meet Willow, a snuggly, lovable, outgoing guy who just wants to be hugged and held!

This gorgeous, soft house panther has a heart of gold and loves greeting visitors to Room 5. Willow truly loves nothing more than pets and being held—he’ll curl right up in your arms and rub his head against your face to show just how much he appreciates the attention. He’s also incredibly playful, and you would never guess he’s 9 years old because he’s truly a giant kitten at heart.

We believe Willow has a nerve condition called Feline Orofacial Pain Syndrome (FOPS) or TMJ dysfunction, which can sometimes cause pain if his mouth opens too wide. He was previously treated for severe stomatitis and no longer has any teeth, which has helped him feel much more comfortable. In his previous home, likely due to discomfort from this condition combined with his high-energy need for attention, it was reported that he bit his human a few times. However, we have not seen this behavior during the more than year he has been at HART.

Willow loves lounging in the sunshine and will occasionally curl up with his roommates, but he would likely do best as the only cat in the home, as he tends to want all of attention for himself! He would also thrive in a calm, child-free environment where his human can give him the interaction, playtime, and enrichment he needs. In return, Willow will shower you with more love than you can imagine. ❤️

We’re open for adoptions Fridays 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Saturdays 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, Sundays noon to 3:00 pm, and by appointment, and we invite you to celebrate Adopt a Shelter Cat with us! Please see our website for information about adopting from HART, as well as to view a listing of available cats and access our online adoption application: www.hartofme.org/adoption-information.

June is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, which we’re super-excited about. We’ll be celebrating all month long by featuring great HART cats, including some of our longer-term resident and special needs kitties.

But first things first. We can’t let the day go by without recognizing National Hug Your Cat Day! You know we love cat hugs and photos of cat hugs—like this sweet moment between Napoleon and his young volunteer friend. The. Best.❤️

And yes, this is your cue to share your favorite happy cat hugs and snuggles pics in the comments. 😺 Enjoy!

We asked, and woweee, did you deliver!

Thank you so much to everyone who responded to our recent plea for donations of food for our kittens, diabetic cats, and cats with food allergies/sensitivities. You pounced right on that, and all told, we received 49 cases of canned food, along with some dry food and extras like cat litter and toys—around $1,500 worth of essential supplies for the special felines in our care.

Your generous support makes HART’s mission possible, and we are so grateful. ❤️

Our sincere appreciation to 100 Women Who Care Southern Maine, a giving circle committed to supporting local nonprofits, who recently chose HART of Maine to receive a generous donation!

100+ Women Who Care Southern Maine is comprised of over 540 women who collaborate to support different nonprofits 4 times per year by each donating $50 to a chosen charity. At their May 4th meeting, 100+WWC member and longtime HART volunteer, Marcia, made a presentation about HART and our mission to an enthusiastic and caring crowd. As a runner up in this quarter’s giving drive, HART has received over $2,700 that will go directly toward helping kitties in need. In 11 years, the group has surpassed $850,000 in donations to 49 incredible nonprofits, and we are honored to be among the beneficiaries. If you are interested in learning more about 100+ Women Who Care Southern Maine and the good work they do, go to 100womenwhocaresouthernmaine.com.

Congratulations to the other donation recipients supported by the group this quarter, The Locker Project and LymeTV. And a big thank you to this amazing group of ladies who are committed to making a direct, positive impact in their local communities!

*FOOD DONATIONS NEEDED*

With an average of 100 felines in our care at any given time in our shelter facility and foster homes, you can imagine the volume of cat food we go through each week! While we’re currently well-stocked on the basic foods, we could really use your help replenishing our pantry with a few specific varieties of canned food we use daily for our kittens, diabetic cats, and kitties with food sensitivities/allergies.

Here is our list of cat diets we specifically need:

—Fancy Feast Classic Pate canned food (This food is SO important for our diabetic kitties!)

—Fancy Feast Kitten canned food

—Natural Balance Duck & Pea, both dry kibble and canned

These items can be found on our ongoing Chewy.com Wish List, a convenient and fun way for you to help us care for our cats, and directly contribute to their health and well-being. When you purchase items through our Chewy wish list, they will get shipped right to our shelter, and, as a bonus, they'll arrive in an awesome box that our cats are sure to love! You can find our Chewy Wish List by searching for "Homeless Animal Rescue Team of Maine, Inc" on the Chewy website, or by following this link: https: https://www.chewy.com/g/homeless-animal-rescue-team-of-maine-inc_b64046833 .

If you happen to find these foods while shopping at your local brick-and-mortar store, you are also welcome to drop off donations during our open adoption hours on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. For more information about donating supplies to HART, please visit the wishlist page of our website.

As always, we thank you for your continued support!

It’s easy to see how 8-year-old Winston has totally won our hearts, and why he is Claudia’s pick for Cat of the Week! This handsome, lowkey guy just wants to be with his people, get lots of pets, snuggle up in the sunlight, and be your sweet, loyal kitty companion. With his history of urinary crystals, Winston needs an equally chill family who can continue providing a urinary support diet and regular health monitoring. He’s been doing great here at HART! Be sure to meet Winston in Room 4.

A big thank you to the Wolf Den group of the Cumberland-North Yarmouth Cub Scout Pack 13, who came to the shelter last week to spend time interacting with the cats AND bring us a whole bunch of cat care items that they collected as part of a scouting service project. As you can see, they were pretty excited, and we really enjoyed and appreciated both their enthusiasm and generosity.

Great job guys. Thank you!😺

We may be in for few chilly, rainy days, but Wren’s forecast is always bright and sunny with a 100% chance of fun!

This 7-month-old, white and orange cutie is a wonderful mix of playful and snuggly, and she will do great in an active household with people who love a cat who is energetic and very involved in their lives. Purrrfect!

We’re open for adoptions Fridays 3-6pm, Saturdays 11am-4pm, Sundays 12-3pm, and other days by appointment. Link in bio for adoption info.😺
