HART of Maine

HART of Maine Welcome to the official HART of Maine page! We are a no-kill adoption center & shelter for cats. Our shelter building was constructed in 2004.
(302)

HART is a NO KILL shelter and adoption center for cats - a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation licensed by the State of Maine. We are a member of the American Humane Association, the American Partnership for Pets and the New England Federation of Humane Societies. HART is staffed mostly by volunteers who are dedicated to the well being of the shelter residents. We care for pets that would otherwise be

out on the street, assuring their safety, health, and comfort. It was custom designed for cat sheltering and offers our residents an open environment, with climbing structures and lots of comfy beds. This environment allows the cats the freedom to play, nest, and hide, as well as form bonds with one another. All of our animals receive lots of love and attention, as well as expert veterinary care.

Cute kitten content (and bonus kitten snuggle pic) incoming!

We’re continuing our focus on our teen kittens this week with two more adorable bonded pairs, and we can’t wait for you to meet them. Now 20 weeks old, these youngsters are sweet as can be, and are really coming into their own.

Nala (female) is a gorgeous Egyptian queen in the body of a colorful tortie cat. She's a bit timid but actually loves to be petted and loved upon. Safia (female) is an ebony beauty who loves gentle pets and will happily lean in once she feels safe. After a week or so in her new foster home, Nala finally decided that her subjects were worthy of her love and began coming up to them willingly for cuddles and love. She just needed a little time to become comfortable in her new environment, as did her sister Safia. If you have a quiet home and a patient dispostition, these ladies would be a great fit for you!

Poodles (male) and Sombra (female) are soft-hearted shadows with a sparkle in their eyes and a spring in their steps. These sweet, playful, and endlessly curious, all-black kittens are always on the lookout for their next adventures—whether it’s chasing a sunbeam across the floor or curling up on a windowsill to watch the world go by. If you're looking for a loving pair to fill your home with joy, these two are ready to charm their way into your heart!

For more information about our kitten adoption process and available kittens, and to access our online kitten adoption application, go to www.hartofme.org/adoption-information. Please note, we do not reserve kittens or process adoption inquiries via social media. All of our kittens live in local foster homes, not at the shelter, and we are available to schedule meet-and-greets 7 days a week. For the health and safety of all of our cats and kittens, we adopt to indoor-only homes.

When it comes to kittens, being a teenager can be a wonderful thing!

With their baby cat cuteness, emerging personalities, heaps of playful energy, and solid basic life skills, kittens in the 4 to 6 month age group are the best of both worlds—young enough to be the adorable baby, old enough to settle into the household more easily. We have several older kittens ready to find their forever homes, and we think it’s about time they made their social media debut, so that’s what we’re gonna do this week! First up:

Ambessa & Persephone (bonded pair, 21 weeks old) are pretty much tuxedo twin sisters. Ambessa is a bold little adventurer with a big personality and even bigger opinions! This playful, confident kitten is always the first to explore a new space and the first to let you know—loudly—when it’s time for attention, snacks, or play. She’s incredibly friendly and loves being around people, as does her sister Persephone, who loves being held and petted, and will turn on her purr motor the moment she feels your touch.

Lucy & Ricky (bonded pair, 19 weeks old) are true besties. Ricky (black) loves to sprawl around and be lazy just as much as he loves to get scrappy and pretend he's a professional wrestler. Lucy (brown tabby and white) is the first one to the party, picking out all the records to play. She loves to move, play, and practice her dance moves. Ricky will stretch right out so that you can pet him and rub his tummy. What an adorable pair!

If you are interested in welcoming HART kittens into your home, you must first submit an adoption application, and then a member of our Kitten Team will review your application and contact you directly. Please note, we do not reserve kittens or process adoption inquiries via social media. All of our kittens live in local foster homes, not at the shelter, and we are available to schedule meet-and-greets 7 days a week. For the health and safety of all of our cats and kittens, we adopt to indoor-only homes.

We’re a little behind on our Adoptable Cat Social Media Homework, so we’re going for extra credit with the two-for-one feature on this beautiful September Sunday!

Introducing Marjorie and Daisy, a lovely, 5-year-old bonded pair that were originally adopted from HART as a kittens and returned to us this past Spring when, unfortunately, circumstances in their former home changed. Marjorie is a pretty, long-haired, white and tabby cat and is the more outgoing one of the two. Friendly and fun-loving, she’s always looking for a head scratch and chin rub. Marjorie has had a neurological condition since birth that causes her to have a head tilt and be a little wobbly, but she gets around just fine. Daisy is an adorable, short-haired tuxedo kitty who is more reserved and cautious than her sister. Although she has found shelter life to be a little stressful, she has slowly come out of her shell with the help of Marjorie and our Socialization Team, and she is more than ready to find a quiet home free from small grabby hands and rambunctious animals. Marjorie and Daisy are truly bonded and must be adopted together. This sweet duo would love a calm home where they can be the center of attention. ❤️

We’re open for adoptions today from noon to 3:00 pm, and we invite you to come in and meet your new feline best friends, who just may be Marjorie and Daisy in Room 2. Can’t make it today? Get in touch to schedule an appointment, or make plans to come in during our adoption hours next weekend! Please see our website for information about adopting from HART, as well as to view a listing of available cats and access our online adoption application: www.hartofme.org/adoption-information. We ask that all prospective adopters have an approved application before arriving at the shelter.

*****ATTENTION FALMOUTH RESIDENTS*****

This cute brown tabby boy was brought to HART by an officer with the Falmouth Police Department, after being discovered lost and up a tree. We've named him Chai, and we estimate him to be between 1 and 3 years old. He is neutered but he is NOT microchipped. We will update this post with additional photos and location info as we are able.

If you believe you are his owner or know who he is, please contact our Shelter Manager, Claudia, by calling the shelter at 207-829-4116 or sending an email to [email protected]. To claim this cat, you must provide proof of ownership in the form of vet records and/or pictures.

Please help us find his family and home by sharing and reacting to our post. Thank you for your support!

It’s Friday, it’s a holiday weekend, and we’re ready to get the adoption parties started! We’ll be open for our usual adoption hours today from 4:00 to 7:00 pm as well as Saturday 11:00am to 4:00 pm, and Sunday noon to 3:00 pm. HART’s Adoption Team can’t wait to introduce you to our cats, including the cute little Tortie pictured here.

Although not exactly a party girl, 2-year-old Mimi is definitely ready for her next adventure: finding a forever home! This darling kitty came to HART earlier this summer from one of our animal rescue partners here in Maine. A calm and sweet cat, she took a little while to get used to the shelter and her new feline roommates, but she has settled in well and manages to charm volunteers and visitors alike.

Mimi has been diagnosed with a significant heart murmur and cardiac disease, and her condition is being managed with medication and periodic cardiac testing, including echocardiograms. Our Medical Team will require that her adopter has an established relationship with a veterinarian and the ability to provide the medication, monitoring, and care that she needs. We will review her specific needs with you prior to adoption. Be sure to meet Mimi in Room 2! ❤️
