Many people believe that fleas, ticks and heartworm are not an issue in Colorado Springs. However changes in our climate over the past decade have made these a much bigger problem than they used to be. We are now seeing heartworm positive dogs in our area who have no travel history outside of Colorado Springs. Just this week, I had two dogs in for surgery and found they had fleas. Dr. Reichart has ticks in vials that she has pulled off dogs in the last couple weeks. She uses them as a creepy show and tell for those that don’t believe ticks are a thing. If your dog hasn’t been on heartworm preventative, we recommend a heartworm test first, then follow with preventative. Fleas and ticks carry parasites and disease, so we recommend getting on preventative. If you want to do all these together, we carry Simparica Trio to cover fleas, ticks, and heartworm with one monthly pill.

We are so blessed to have the relationship we have had for so many years with Harleys Hope and we are so blessed to have all of you to help such a deserving organization. 💙

Thank you again to our Together Tuesday donors! We picked up the donations at Bijou Animal Hospital today and, while we're still counting some items, I can tell you we received over 467 lbs. of pet food, treats and litter, plus a new dog ramp, toys, coats, and cash donations.

And, the timing couldn't have been better as we received an emergency cat food delivery request through Colorado Pet Pantry this afternoon. Thanks to your donations we were able to deliver cat food, litter and treats to a sight-impaired gentleman in Peyton so he could feed his 4 cats.

We Will Be Closed on Friday, July 3rd for the Fourth of July holiday. We will be open regular business hours on Monday, July 6th. Please plan accordingly when needing to pick up medication or food. Please try to pick up earlier in the week. Thursday July 2nd will be very busy.

Harleys Hope creates pet care packages to distribute to help seniors in need. We are helping by doing a small pet drive for their upcoming Holiday Pet Care Package project. Harleys Hope needs canned and dry food, treats for cats and dogs, as well as new toys and coats or sweaters. Items may be dropped off at Bijou Animal Hospital, 123 Swope Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80909

There has been a lot in the news about the New World Screwworm that has been confirmed in Texas and New Mexico. This is not just a typical bot fly larvae that we commonly see towards the end of the summer in Colorado. It is much more serious. Veterinarians are watching food animals closely as they are the most commonly affected. However, your dogs can also be affected. Fortunately, the same medication we use for heartworm/fleas/ticks will also protect against screwworm. You should have already started Simparica Trio for the season, but if you haven’t, stop by the hospital and we will get you set up.
