Meet Zinger.

Zinger is a 5-year-old beagle mix with short legs, a big personality, and, well... a few extra pounds. Okay, more than a few.

At CHS, we firmly believe every body is a beach body. That said, Zinger's beach body could probably benefit from a few more laps around the shoreline.

If you've ever wanted a pot-bellied piglet but wished it would stay puppy dog-sized forever, have we got the guy for you. Zinger bears a striking resemblance to Babe, complete with a round belly, determined attitude, and the confidence of an animal that has never once questioned whether he should have that extra snack.

Despite carrying around some extra baggage, Zinger still loves to zip around the yard and play fetch. His little legs get moving, his ears start flapping, and suddenly you're watching what can only be described as athletic optimism in action.

He's a people-loving guy and he can be dog selective, but he tends to do much better once he's out of the kennel and able to strut his stuff.

Zinger wasn't always this round, and with the right family, regular exercise, and a few fewer treats, we know he'll be feeling his best in no time.

Float like a butterfly. Zing like a porky little puppy.

Come meet Zinger. We promise he's even more charming in person.

There are cats that demand attention, and then there's Pot Roast.

Pot Roast is a 4-year-old orange gentleman who has perfected the art of taking life one nap at a time. He enjoys sunny windows, soft beds, and keeping a watchful eye on his people from a comfortable distance. If relaxation were an Olympic sport, he'd be bringing home the gold.

That's not to say he's all business. Every now and then, Pot Roast remembers he's still young enough to have a little fun. A toy mouse or dangling string might inspire a brief burst of enthusiasm before he returns to his regularly scheduled lounging.

We've joked that Pot Roast's senior superlative would be "Least Likely to Change in Any Way" because honestly? He's already got life figured out.

If you're looking for a steady companion, a professional couch ornament, and a cat who brings a sense of calm wherever he goes, Pot Roast may be exactly what your home is missing.

Tiny kittens like Dew remind us why partnerships matter.

Dew came to Chesapeake Humane Society as a fragile neonatal kitten who depended entirely on bottle feeding to survive. Like so many kittens we see during kitten season, he needed round-the-clock care, frequent feedings, and proper nutrition to have a chance at a healthy future.

Thanks to a donation of 25 pounds of kitten formula through the Mighty Cat Orphan Kitten Club Forever Formula Fund, Dew and several other vulnerable kittens received the lifesaving nutrition they needed during their earliest days.

During peak kitten season, formula is one of our most-needed supplies. Having it readily available meant we could say "yes" to more neonatal kittens and get them into foster homes quickly, without worrying about whether we had enough resources to support them.

Dew's foster mom watched him grow from a tiny bottle baby into a healthy, playful kitten. Every bottle helped him gain strength and reach important milestones. Today, he's a reminder that something as simple as kitten formula can truly save lives.

As one of our foster caregivers shared, "When you're caring for bottle babies, formula isn't optional, it's everything. Knowing it was available allowed me to focus on helping Dew grow instead of worrying about running out."

Thank you to the Orphan Kitten Club for helping us provide lifesaving care to the tiniest members of our community.

Meet adoptable dog, Nessie

Some dogs walk into a room and immediately demand attention. Nessie isn't one of them.

At first, Nessie prefers to hang back and take it all in. She likes to observe, assess the situation, and decide for herself when it's time to make a new friend. But if you're patient, you'll be rewarded with one of the sweetest dogs you'll ever meet.

Nessie is a 2-year-old hound mix who recently found herself back at CHS after being adopted. While change can be hard for her, she's showing us every day just how much potential she has. Once she trusts you, her personality begins to shine, and you'll discover a loyal, loving companion who was worth every bit of the wait.

We think Nessie would thrive in a home with another confident dog who can help show her that the world isn't such a scary place. A canine friend could make all the difference as she settles into her next chapter.

Nessie isn't looking for the loudest home or the busiest home. She's looking for the right home.

Could it be yours?

At CHS part of our Workplace Culture Policy is focus on self care. Animal Welfare and Veterinary Medicine are two careers where burnout rates are the highest. We love our team and we REALLY love when our community supports them, too!

Big thank you to clubpilatesgreatbridge for hosting us for a private class this evening!

Our kennel is full of hopeful shelter graduates at CHS… and each adorable face is ready to move out of student housing. 🎓🐾

Some of these dogs have been cramming for finals (learning manners, leash walking, and how not to lose their minds over snack time). Others are just counting down the days until they can trade kennel life for couches, backyards, and someone who thinks they’re the greatest thing ever.

The Class of 2026 is full of big personalities, loyal sidekicks, professional snugglers, and at least a few dogs who would absolutely peak at recess.

Check out their full bios and fill out an application on our website, www.chesapeakehumane.org or stop by our shelter 12-4pm Tuesday-Sunday.
