Recently we have had some questions about how to tell if a blanket is waterproof. There is a method referred to as the “water drop method” To test this you toss a bit of water on the dry blanket and check that it beads up on the surface. You let it sit and check the inside of the blanket for wetness. If it passes this test it is considered by many to be waterproof. HOWEVER, while a blanket may pass the initial test it still may only be resistant. An older blanket may be able to get wet with light rain and slow pressure but the material cannot hold up to a heavy down pour of rain. Thus rendering the test inaccurate. The only absolute way to test a blankets true waterproofing is if the horse is caught in a rain storm and comes in wet or dry. Unless you test each blanket with different water pressures and amounts by hanging it on a fence and spraying it.
So that being said we are able to tell the difference in texture of a blanket that is freshly waterproofed vs one that is older. It is recommended by many name brand blanket companies to re-waterproof after a few seasons. As always we check brand warranties and instructions.
