Meg is a 9 year old Chinese Crested, previously visited Dr. Swears for full mouth extraction due to her diseased teeth and causing discomfort. When Max started visiting SAH, he permitted us to conduct his physical examination while also updating his vaccinations and heartworm prevention. As he aged and experienced an incident of sedation, he has resisted any updates on his preventive care. Fortunately, with the help of Happy Visits, under Dr. Swears’ guidance, Max has started to build confidence and trust in her.

Dr. Swears will take Max for a walk in our treatment area, where they will practice his commands in Spanish. She will use high-value treats to enhance their bond and build trust. Afterward, she will rejoin the client in the exam room to review the exercises practiced at home, concentrate on muzzle placement and mat training, performing a physical examination, and establish future goals for Max. Thanks to Dr. Swears’ expertise and the application of gentle pinching and touch techniques, she has successfully carried out a thorough physical exam, confidently assessing Max’s gums, paws, ears, listening to his chest and lungs.

Happy Visits are led by Dr. Swears, a level 2 Fear Free Certified Veterinarian, designed to help pets overcome fear, anxiety and stress during veterinary visits. During the initial examination, she discusses future goals to ensure a stress-free experience. It’s Heatstroke Awareness Month! Pets can overheat fast—even on short walks or in parked cars.

To keep pets safe in hot weather:

Hydration: Provide plenty of water and consider canned food or adding water to dry kibble to boost hydration. Watch for dehydration signs like less energy, dry nose or gums, panting, and loss of appetite.

Paw Protection: Hot pavement can burn paw pads. Exercise pets during cooler times and consider booties for protection. Favor walking on grass or dirt over hot sidewalks.

Pest Prevention: Warm weather increases the risk of fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. Ensure pets are on effective parasite prevention, even indoor pets, as parasites can enter your home. Stay cool, stay safe!
