☀️🐾 Summer Safety: Heat, Hikes & Snakes! 🐍

With the summer heat in full swing, we love hitting the trails with our dogs—but warmer weather means taking a few extra precautions. Keep your pups safe on your next walk with these quick tips:

Watch for Snakes: Snakes are active! Stick to well-cleared paths and keep your dog on a leash. Don't let them poke their noses into tall brush or rocky crevices. If you suspect a bite, head straight to a vet immediately.

Test the Ground: If the pavement or path is too hot to hold the back of your hand against for 7 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog's paws. Opt for shady trails or early morning walks.

Beat the Heat: Dogs overheat quickly. Bring plenty of fresh water, take breaks in the shade, and watch for heavy panting or lethargy.

Have fun and stay cool out there! Before you head out on your summer adventures, make sure your pup is up-to-date on flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives—give us a call to check!

☀️ HEAT ADVISORY: Keeping Your Pets Cool when the Temperature Skyrockets! 🐾

Whew, it is getting seriously hot out there! As the temperatures rise, our furry friends need a little extra help staying safe, cool, and hydrated.

Here are a few quick tips from the Mill Creek team to keep your pets safe during a heat wave:

💧Hydration is Key: Keep water bowls filled with fresh, cool water both indoors and out.

⚠️ Watch the Pavement: If the asphalt is too hot for the back of your hand, it’s too hot for their paws! Stick to shady walks in the early morning or late evening.

⚠️ Never Leave Pets in Cars: Not even for a quick minute, and even with the windows cracked. Temperatures inside a vehicle can reach dangerous levels in seconds.

⚠️ Limit Exercise: Save the heavy fetch sessions for a cooler day and opt for some indoor brain games instead.

⚠️ Know the Signs of Heatstroke: Heavy panting, glazed eyes, rapid heartbeat, restlessness, excessive drooling, or lethargy. If you notice any of these, get your pet into the AC and call us right away!

Stay safe, stay cool, and find yourself a nice shady spot today!

🐾 WIN A HANDMADE BOWL BY HEATHER! 🐾

Does your pup get nervous at the veterinarian? We want to help change those nerves into tail wags!

Starting today, Mill Creek Veterinary Clinic is launching a Happy Visit Competition.
The patient to come in for the most Happy Visits over the next 3 months will win a beautiful, custom pet bowl handmade right here by our very own Heather!

What is a "Happy Visit"?

If your dog is nervous about visiting the vet, we recommend stopping by when no procedures or injections are due. The goal is simple:

🐾 Walk through the front door.

🐾 Get lots of love and pets from our team.

🐾 Enjoy high-value treats and toys.

Build a positive association with being at the clinic!

The Grand Prize:

Heather has crafted a stunning handmade bowl that fits approximately 1 cup of dry food—perfect for medium to smaller dogs.

Wait! What if my dog is a giant?

Don’t worry! If a larger dog wins the gold, Heather will custom-make a bigger version just for them. (Please note: The pottery process takes a few weeks, so they’ll have to wait a "hot minute" for their custom piece!)

The Rules:

Duration: The contest runs for the next 3 months.

The Goal: Be the patient to obtain the most successful Happy Visits.

How to Enter: Just let the front desk know you’re here for a "Happy Visit" so we can track your progress! 🐾

The sun is out and the days are getting warmer! ☀️

As we all head outdoors to enjoy the weather, remember to keep those water bowls overflowing! A hydrated pet is a happy pet. It’s also the season where fleas and ticks are most active, so now is the perfect time to double-check that your furry family members are up to date on their prevention.

Need to restock or have a question about the best protection for your pet? Give us a call or stop by to see us!

Spring into Pet Safety! 🌸🐶🐱

The flowers are blooming and the days are getting longer—spring has officially arrived at Mill Creek Veterinary Clinic! While we’re all excited to get back outdoors, the change in season brings a few important things to keep in mind for our furry friends.

Check out our Top 3 Spring Tips to keep your pets happy and healthy:

Watch Out for "Hidden" Toxins: Many spring favorites like Lilies, Tulips, and Azaleas are toxic to pets. If you’re gardening, keep the mulch and fertilizers out of reach!

Don’t Skip the Prevention: Warmer weather means fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes are back in action. Make sure your pet is up to date on their monthly preventatives.

Spring Cleaning Safety: If you’re deep-cleaning the house, ensure your pets are in a well-ventilated area away from strong chemicals or fumes.

Is your pet ready for the season? Give us a call or stop by to schedule a spring wellness check-up or to restock your heartworm and flea prevention!

With the temperatures finally climbing in Virginia, we’re all excited to get back outside! However, a warmer Charlottesville means our furry friends need a little extra help staying safe and hydrated.

Dogs and cats don't sweat like we do, making them much more susceptible to overheating. Whether you’re hanging out in the backyard or headed to the park, here are a few quick tips to keep those tails wagging:

Fresh Water is Key: Ensure there is always a bowl of cool, clean water available both inside and outside.

Frozen Treats: Try freezing some pet-safe broth or wet food in a toy for a hydrating, chilly snack!

Know the Signs: Keep an eye out for excessive panting, lethargy, or dark red gums, which can be early signs of heat exhaustion.

We want everyone to enjoy this beautiful sunshine safely! If you have any concerns about your pet’s hydration or heat tolerance, give us a call or stop by to see us.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and enjoy the sun! 🐶🐱

The Mill Creek team took over Rivanna River Company Riversong Sauna this weekend for some serious bonding time. Let’s just say some of us handled the cold plunge better than others! 😂 It was such an incredible experience that it might just become our new yearly tradition.

As an independent clinic, we love supporting other local businesses that make our community so special, and this day was the perfect example of that.

After drying off, we headed to Högwaller Brewing to warm up our toes and fill our bellies. So many laughs and even more memories made with this hardworking crew. 🍻✨

We’re happy to report our staff is able to make it in and we’ll be back in the clinic tomorrow, Wednesday, January 28th! ❄️ 🐾

If you would rather stay snuggled with your pet warm and safe at home - no judgement here - please send us a text or email and we’ll get you rescheduled! ☃️
