what is a ceremonial dove release?

for decades now, people have been sold the romanticized idea that releasing doves at their event is a beautiful, loving way to commemorate a milestone or event in one's life. in reality, the truth about dove releases reveals a sordid practice. these fully domesticated birds, bred en masse in captivity, raised until just old enough to fly, are released without any training or "homing" capabilities (a learned skill, NOT an inherent trait in pigeons), and will almost certainly die a horrible death.

these birds will try and assimilate into feral flocks, usually unsuccessfully. they are a magnet for predators and have zero survival instincts, so they are bullied out. often, they come across humans who will gawk and record their desperate, silent plea to be saved. it's only the very luckiest who manage to find help and are rescued in time to save their lives. if you ever find an all white-pigeon, you can usually convince them to walk into a wire dog kennel or carrier of their own volition with a bribe of some seeds. these birds are truly so desperate to be rescued, they will directly seek out humans, despite being too terrified to fully trust us.

you can become a pigeon hero today and learn how to help feral flocks, by monitoring them for stringfoot, and feeding them proper, nutritious foods. join our Pรฆtreon and check out the FREE flock feeding guide, and other available chapters of the continuously-expanding pigeon care guides. pigeons need and deserve our help and respect, and we can each do our part to protect them ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

Pigeon racing is a sadistic bloodsport in which thousands of pigeons are bred, banded, and released hundreds or thousands of miles away in a psychotic lottery to see who "wins". the prize? their life. they will live to see another race, where their odds won't be in their favor.

Xena Warrior Princess is unbelievably lucky. not only was she spray painted green as a bait bird, she escaped a hawk attack and was found by people who actually reached out for help. she self-rescued by crash landing in their pool, where she had to be scooped out. when she was finally brought to me, I was stunned at how much she had already survived.

I genuinely didn't expect her to recover. she was critical upon intake and was in mild respiratory distress. her wounds were severe but not fresh, and I treated them, as well as the pain for her broken wing. she was in for a long recovery ahead, and I held my breath.

one week later, as Xena was perched on my head happily preening, I still couldn't fathom her incredible strength and perseverance, while remaining so gentle and kind. she is a true testament to the resilience and heart that these amazing birds have.

I'm so glad I said yes to taking her in, despite how full we currently are. Xena has earned her place as a permanent flock member, and after her coccidiosis treatment is complete, she will join her new flock family. eventually, we will also find her a mate, so she can finally have her happily ever after.

Hi everyone. I have been BUSY, and that's a massive understatement.

We recently moved! We are still located in the Hudson Valley, and still very much in the process of settling in. Between not being able to rebuild our loft, and an escalating rat infestation that the landlord refused to address, we decided moving was our better option. Our lease was up in January, and we finally found our ideal location only 3 weeks ago. Moving is probably the most stressful, dysregulating life event that I could possibly imagine, and considering how much I have moved, you would think I'd be used to it by now. I'm not. Every time it absolutely physically and mentally taxes me to a point that I come close to burning out. I'm trying really hard not to let that happen this time, so I decided to take a break from social media.

I really have missed hearing from all of you! I am currently working on new content and plan to resume regular posting next week. I have also made the decision to only post our flock on Pรฆtreon or Close Friends stories (exclusively for donors). This is due in part to an escalating stalking situation which has caused me to fear for their safety. I will continue to post activism related content on Instagram, but public posts will be limited for the time being.

If you would like to support the flock, and rescues such as this brand new sweet baby who came to us just last night, please consider becoming a monthly Pรฆtreon. Your tax deductible monthly donation of any amount is crucial to continue doing this life-saving work. Babes thank you all for your continued support and understanding while we navigate this difficult time. As always, if any pigeon related help is ever needed, just reach out.

Happy Pigeon Appreciation Day! ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

On June 15th, 2022 I got asked to help a lost racing pigeon, not knowing how it would alter the entire trajectory of my life. After I learned about the horrors of pigeon racing, I promised Miles I would do everything I could to give him the life he deserved. I tried to find him a sanctuary, but wound up becoming one, so I could keep my promise to him.

Now, 4 years later, we are not just a sanctuary, but a flock, and a family. Miles has given my life the purpose and meaning that I had long searched for. I always had the goal of starting a sanctuary, and Miles pushed me to actually do it. There is no time like the present, especially when someone's life depends on it.

Since 2022, we've had many hardships, but have persevered them all, together. As we continue forward, we are asking for your support in fundraising for a permanent location in New York State. Check out the links in bio to donate or for other ways to support us.

No matter what you do, always respect pigeons ๐Ÿ’œ

Full disclosure, I have been unable to update for the past month or so due to how busy I am, but I worked on a lot of new content before taking a break and will be back to it very soon!

There are also lots of new perks and exclusive content coming in the near future, so stay tuned, and thanks for all your support! We couldn't do this lifesaving work without your donations, and recently there has been a big drop in donor support.

Obviously this is a hard time for absolutely everyone, we are all struggling, and it's why I appreciate all of you who continue to rally for the pigeons. You are their heroes too! ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ
