Dr. Milligan walks us through an endoscope for a dog who presented for vomiting and not eating. 💜
Buck’s biopsy results came back and it was found that his health concerns were from a mild to severe case of inflammatory bowel disease or IBD, which can be a result of inflammatory cells invading the gut lining, usually due to some kind of abnormal immune response to food or bacteria.
Prednisone was prescribed to help with the inflammation as well as omeprazole to help with increased stomach acid and/or any reflux or severe gastritis that may be occurring as a result of the IBD diagnosis. She also recommended a strict diet plan as follows:
“A strict low-allergen or novel-protein diet (or a hydrolyzed diet) as part of his long-term management. Here are some options I commonly use:
Hydrolyzed diet options
* Royal Canin HP (Hydrolyzed Protein) – canned and dry
* Royal Canin Ultamino – dry
* Hill’s Z/d – canned and dry
* Purina HA (Hydrolyzed Antigen) – chicken, salmon, or vegetarian formulas (canned and/or dry available)
* Purina Pro Plan Veterinary EL (Elemental) – dry
* VetLife (Farmina) Ultrahypo – dry
* Blue Buffalo HF – dry
Complimentary hydrolyzed treats
* Purina Gentle Snackers
* Hill’s Hypo Treat
* Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein Treats
Novel protein / limited-ingredient options
* Rayne Nutrition – Kangaroo, Rabbit, or Crocodile formulas (canned, dry, and some air-dried)
* Royal Canin Selected Protein – Rabbit (PR), Duck (PD), Venison (PV), or Whitefish (PW)
* Hill’s D/d – Duck, Venison, or Salmon
* Just Food for Dogs – Venison & Squash, Fish & Sweet Potato, or Derm Support (Salmon)
* Zignature limited-ingredient formulas (kangaroo, duck, venison, whitefish, etc.)
Complimentary novel-protein treats
* Rayne Simple Ingredient Treats (sweet potato, rabbit jerky, kangaroo jerky, alligator jerky, etc.)
A strict diet trial means no other foods, treats, or flavored medications unless they are approved.”
Dr. Milligan and her team are confident that if the owners stick to the treatment plan, Buck will have a great recovery! 💜
