Dr. Milligan walks us through an endoscope for a dog who presented for vomiting and not eating. 💜

Buck’s biopsy results came back and it was found that his health concerns were from a mild to severe case of inflammatory bowel disease or IBD, which can be a result of inflammatory cells invading the gut lining, usually due to some kind of abnormal immune response to food or bacteria.

Prednisone was prescribed to help with the inflammation as well as omeprazole to help with increased stomach acid and/or any reflux or severe gastritis that may be occurring as a result of the IBD diagnosis. She also recommended a strict diet plan as follows:

“A strict low-allergen or novel-protein diet (or a hydrolyzed diet) as part of his long-term management. Here are some options I commonly use:

Hydrolyzed diet options

* Royal Canin HP (Hydrolyzed Protein) – canned and dry
* Royal Canin Ultamino – dry
* Hill’s Z/d – canned and dry
* Purina HA (Hydrolyzed Antigen) – chicken, salmon, or vegetarian formulas (canned and/or dry available)
* Purina Pro Plan Veterinary EL (Elemental) – dry
* VetLife (Farmina) Ultrahypo – dry
* Blue Buffalo HF – dry

Complimentary hydrolyzed treats

* Purina Gentle Snackers
* Hill’s Hypo Treat
* Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein Treats

Novel protein / limited-ingredient options

* Rayne Nutrition – Kangaroo, Rabbit, or Crocodile formulas (canned, dry, and some air-dried)
* Royal Canin Selected Protein – Rabbit (PR), Duck (PD), Venison (PV), or Whitefish (PW)
* Hill’s D/d – Duck, Venison, or Salmon
* Just Food for Dogs – Venison & Squash, Fish & Sweet Potato, or Derm Support (Salmon)
* Zignature limited-ingredient formulas (kangaroo, duck, venison, whitefish, etc.)

Complimentary novel-protein treats

* Rayne Simple Ingredient Treats (sweet potato, rabbit jerky, kangaroo jerky, alligator jerky, etc.)

A strict diet trial means no other foods, treats, or flavored medications unless they are approved.”

Dr. Milligan and her team are confident that if the owners stick to the treatment plan, Buck will have a great recovery! 💜

Dr. Berg walks a client through what could be happening with her pup and how he intends to treat him. 💜

One of the best ways to ease a clients concerns about what is happening with their pet, is by educating them on the issue at hand. Generally, when you can provide some level of understanding, clients tend to not only trust us more with the care of their pet, but it also removes a bit of the stress that comes with these situations. Our entire team tries to apply this level of compassion with every client and patient that comes through our doors. 👏🏽💜

Is your pet’s scratching trying to tell you something? 🐾

August is Itchy Pet Awareness Month, and constant biting, licking, or scratching isn't just a habit—it's often a sign of underlying allergies or skin conditions that deserve relief!

🔶 Obsessive paw licking or chewing
🔶 Frequent head shaking or ear scratching
🔶 Red, inflamed, or darkened skin (especially on the belly or paws)
🔶 Recurrent skin or ear infections
🔶 Unexplained hair loss or patchy spots

Finding the true root cause is the fastest path to long-term comfort.

We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Vlora Karpuzi, our 2025–2026 rotating intern, is staying with us as our new Neurology Resident!

Dr. Karpuzi will undergo intense, specialized post-graduate training to become a board-certified specialist in veterinary neurology and neurosurgery. We couldn’t be prouder to support her on this exciting journey! 💜

" I am excited to continue my journey with Guardian Veterinary Specialists as a Neurology Resident. I earned my veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and completed a rotating internship at Guardian Veterinary Specialists, where I developed a deep interest in neurology. I enjoy all aspects of both medical and surgical neurology and look forward to continuing to expand my knowledge and clinical skills while working alongside a talented and dedicated team. I am especially passionate about providing compassionate, high-quality care to patients and supporting their families through complex neurologic conditions.

In my free time, I enjoy traveling, trying out new recipes in the kitchen or finding new running trails. "

Help us give a warm welcome to Dr. Trace Presley, one of our newest surgery interns! We’re thrilled to have him on the team. 💜

"I am originally from the small town of Franklin, LA, about 30 minutes from the Gulf. I grew up very immersed in the culture, food, and hospitality that Louisiana is known for, and it will always be home. My love of animals and veterinary medicine began in the 4-H Livestock program where I showed cattle, pigs, and exhibition poultry at the parish, state, and national level. I earned my bachelor’s and DVM from Louisiana State University.

In my free time, I like to spend time outdoors with my two dogs, Murphy and Waco, weight lift, and read. My surgical interests include surgical oncology, minimally invasive surgery, and orthopedics. I’m very excited to meet and work with such an amazing team! "

Please welcome Surgery Intern Dr. Nicole Mango!

Dr. Mango earned her veterinary degree from Royal Veterinary College in 2024 along with a Master’s in Wildlife Forensic Science and Conservation online through the University of Florida in 2023. Throughout her experiences, she has developed a special interest in primarily trauma and emergency surgeries including fractures, thoracotomies, and wound care associated with polytraumas.

Her dream is to become a board-certified surgeon in small animals and to use what she learns to travel and volunteer services for wildlife conservation and rehabilitation around the world.

Outside of the hospital, she enjoys skiing, hiking, watching movies, traveling and reading books with her family book club each month. She shares her home with her two pets, a dog named Fig and a cat named Winnifred.

Welcome to Guardian, Dr. Mango! We are thrilled to have you! 💜
