🐍 Not all snakes are something to fear... some are beloved family members! 💛

This is Stella, a beautiful albino ball python who recently stopped by BHVC for a visit. She was calm, curious, and more than happy to pose for a few photos!

With all the recent talk about snake bite awareness, we wanted to take a moment to appreciate these incredible animals. While it's important to give wild snakes plenty of space and respect, it's also worth remembering that snakes are a very important part of our ecosystem and for many families, they are cherished pets.

At BHVC we are proud to care for more than just dogs and cats. We enjoy helping our exotic patients stay healthy, whether they have fur or scales!

Isn't Stella just gorgeous? 💛💜

Meet Benny (Beignet)! 💜🐾

If smiles were a sport, Benny would be an Olympic champion!

This sweet boy recently stopped by for a visit and kept us laughing the whole time. Full of wiggles and kisses, and enough personality for 3 dogs, he's the definition of a ham.. a ham-ful if you will 😆

We love getting to know each pet's unique personality, and Benny made sure his was impossible to miss. Thanks for brightening our day, buddy - we can't wait to see you again!

🐍Snake Season is Here in Alabama!🐍

As the weather warms up, snakes become much more active, and curious pets can accidentally get a little too close.

While many snakes are harmless, Alabama is home to several venomous species, inlcuding:
-Copperheads
-Cottonmouths (Water Moccasins)
-Timber Rattlesnakes
-Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes
-Pygmy Rattlesnakes

How can you reduce your pet's risk?
-Keep them on a leash when hiking
-Stay on established trails
-Avoid tall grass, brush piles, and wood piles
-Keep your yard mowed and free of debris where snakes may hide
-Watch pets closely near bodies of water and in wooded areas

If you think your pet has been bitten:
🚫DO NOT:
-try to remove the venom
-apply a tourniquet or ice
-"wait and see"

✅DO:
-Keep your pet as calm as possible
-Carry them (if you can safely do so) to limit movement
-Seek veterinary care immediately

Common signs of a venomous snake bite include:
-Sudden swelling
-Pain or crying out
-Puncture wounds (though they can be hard to find)
-Weakness or collapse
-Difficulty breathing

The sooner treatment begins, the better the outcome!
If your pet is bitten by a snake, call us or the nearest ER right away so we can help guide you through the next steps. Quick action can make all the difference! 💜🐾

🦷✨Did you know? Dental disease is one of the most common health problems we see in pets, and it often starts long before you notice bad breath.

Plaque can begin forming within hours after a teeth cleaning. If left untreated, it hardens into tartar and can lead to painful gum disease, tooth loss, and even affect the heart, liver, and kidneys.

That's why we're excited to now offer PerioVive as part of our dental care recommendations! PerioVive is designed to help support healthy gums, reduce harmful bacteria in the mouth, and promote better oral health in between professional dental cleanings. During every anesthetic dental cleaning at BHVC, we apply PerioVive below the gumline after your pet's teeth have been professionally scaled and polished. This is an area that can only be treated safely and effectively while you pet is under anesthesia.

For pets that would benefit from continued support at home, PerioVive can also be sent home. Owners simply apply it along the gum line using a clean gloved finger or a cotton swab as directed by our team.

Remember, the gold standard for dental care is still:
-Daily tooth brushing
-Professional dental cleanings when recommended
-VOHC approved dental products
-And now, additional support like PerioVive when appropriate!

If you've noticed bad breath, red or bleeding gums, tartar buildup, or your pet seems reluctant to chew, don't assume it's just "getting older." Dental disease is painful, but it is also treatable.

Have questions about your pet's oral health or whether PerioVive is right for them? We're happy to help! Give us a call to schedule your pet's exam today.

🚗🐾Traveling With Your Pet This Summer?🐾🚗

Whether you're heading to the beach, the lake, or visiting family, a little planning can help make travel safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

Before you hit the road, make sure you have:

-Plenty of fresh water and a travel bowl
-Food, treats, and any medications your pet needs
-A leash, collar, and ID tags
-Updated microchip information
-Medical records and vaccine information
-A favorite toy, blanket, or other comfort item

While traveling:

-Never leave your pet unattended in a parked vehicle, even for just a few minutes
-Use a secured crate, carrier, or pet seatbelt whenever possible
-Take regular breaks for water, potty time, and stretching
-Keep an eye out for signs of overheating, especially during outdoor activities

And remember - new places can be exciting but also stressful. Giving your pet time to adjust to unfamiliar sights, sounds, smells, and routines can help make the trip more enjoyable for everyone.

Where are you and your pets headed this summer? Tell us in the comments!

🩹🐾Is Your Pet's First-Aid Kit Summer Ready?🐾🩹

Summer adventures can be a lot of fun - but whether you're heading to the lake, hitting the trails, or taking a road trip, it's always a good idea to be prepared for minor bumps and scrapes.

Here are a few items we recommend keeping in your pet's first-aid kit:
-Gause pads and non-stick bandages
-Self-adhering vet wrap
-Saline solution for flushing eyes and wounds
-Tweezers for splinters or debris
-Digital thermometer
-Disposable gloves
-A towel or blanket
-Any medications your pet takes regularly
-Emergency contact information, including your veterinarian and the nearest emergency clinic

Remember: A first-aid kit is meant to help stabilize your pet until veterinary care can be obtained - it is not a substitute for professional veterinary care

A little preparation today can make a big difference during an unexpected situation! 🐾💜

🏊‍♀️☀️Water Safety for Pets☀️🏊‍♀️

Summer means more time by the pool, at the lake, and on the water - but don't forget that our pets need a little extra supervision, too!

While many dogs enjoy swimming, not every dog is a natural swimmer, and even experienced swimmers can become tired or get into trouble.

💦Keep these water safety tips in mind:
-Always supervise pets around water
-Introduce swimming gradually and never force a pet into the water
-Consider a life jacket for boating, paddle boarding, or weak swimmers
-Provide fresh drinking water to discourage drinking from pools, lakes, rivers, and especially the ocean
- Rinse your pet after swimming to remove chlorine, salt, or other irritants (and clean those ears!)
-Watch for signs of exhaustion and take frequent breaks

If you're visiting lakes or ponds, be aware of blue-green algae. Some algae blooms can produce toxins that are extremely dangerous - and even fatal - to pets.

Have a safe and fun summer, and don't forget the sunscreen and water breaks - for both you and your furry family members!
