Bedford Humane Society Virginia

Bedford Humane Society Virginia Non-Profit, foster-based rescue in VA. No animals are kept on site. Apply to adopt online. Each has their own story that requires a personalized approach.

Mission and Goal: Our mission and our goal at the Bedford Humane Society, Inc. is the elimination of pet overpopulation and suffering in the town and county of Bedford through education, spay/neuter programs, and pet adoptions as well as the prevention of animal cruelty and neglect through advocacy and humane education. Vision: Our vision is to build a caring community where no companion animal is

born unwanted, where they are all happy, healthy, and well fed. All the animals with BHS are in foster homes so not only are they getting the care they need to get back on their feet, but also the attention and training to become a wonderful family member. While we don’t get the show animals that everyone flocks to, here they get a fresh start with us, a new beginning, and a whole new lease on life.

Meet Socks

Socks' breed is unknown. We can only guess: he has energy like a Border Collie and can howl like a hound when sirens go by. He weighs around 30 pounds now at 5 months. He will probably be around 45 pounds as an adult. He was a stray, therefore we do not know his history. His adoption fee is $200 during the month of August for this litter of hound mixes. He is high energy so he will need a fenced yard and an active family. He wants to learn and be with his people. He does play a little rough when he gets excited, therefore we do not recommend small children. Can you give Socks a chance to grow into the perfect companion?

Socks has been dewormed, microchipped, vaccinated, tested for heartworms, and is on heartworm preventatives. Socks has already been neutered.

Meet Penny

Penny... this little dumpling was found all alone... another stray taken from a very full shelter to find a a home. Penny is a mischievous little girl who will chew on your fingers, your shoe laces, pull you pant legs, follow you everywhere and give you lots of kisses while sitting in your lap. Penny is an active little girl with lots of energy. Penny would probably be better suited to a family with older children who understand puppy behavior. Penny does jump up on you and she has sharp little puppy nails plus sharp teeth. She means no harm but she can be a little mouthy ... working on that. She is not house trained but she does go potty when we go outside. She rides well in the car and is working on her leash training.

Penny’s vaccines are currently up to date for her age, she has been dewormed and will be microchipped before she is adopted. Penny’s adoption fee is $275 with a $50 neuter fee refundable when she is spayed. Since she is not yet spayed, Penny is not available for adoption outside of counties contiguous to Bedford County.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does BHS ask for an approved application before a meet and greet?

BHS is a foster-based facility, which means our fosters work really hard at their day jobs, then come home and take care of their foster animal(s). We don’t want our fosters to take time away from their already busy schedules if an applicant wouldn’t be approved to adopt with us, or is not really serious about adopting. Our application does not mean you must adopt the animal you are interested in. The application simply tells us you are seriously looking for your next forever pet and that you would be approved to adopt from us.

Okay I filled out my application now what?
