Bedford Humane Society Virginia

Bedford Humane Society Virginia Non-Profit, foster-based rescue in VA. No animals are kept on site. Apply to adopt online. Each has their own story that requires a personalized approach.

Mission and Goal: Our mission and our goal at the Bedford Humane Society, Inc. is the elimination of pet overpopulation and suffering in the town and county of Bedford through education, spay/neuter programs, and pet adoptions as well as the prevention of animal cruelty and neglect through advocacy and humane education. Vision: Our vision is to build a caring community where no companion animal is

born unwanted, where they are all happy, healthy, and well fed. All the animals with BHS are in foster homes so not only are they getting the care they need to get back on their feet, but also the attention and training to become a wonderful family member. While we don’t get the show animals that everyone flocks to, here they get a fresh start with us, a new beginning, and a whole new lease on life.

Meet Joey

Joey is a sweet 4-month-old pup with a big heart and an even bigger zest for life. He’s playful, cuddly, and full of energy—always ready for a game or a nap on your lap. Joey is blind in one eye, but that doesn’t slow him down—he explores with curiosity and loves to be close to his people. He’s working hard on house training and does wonderfully in his playpen. He’s currently around 6 lbs and will likely be a small dog. He'll be perfect for a loving, patient family who can provide daily adventures and plenty of affection. Joey came to Bedford Humane Society with his mom and sibling brother. Both have been adopted leaving little Joey behind. It is estimated that he was born in early June. His owner has failing health and had to find new home for his loved companion animals. Joey lost use of his right eye in early life, and therefore it appears to not bother him. Is Joey your next family member?

Joey has been dewormed, microchipped, vaccinated and neutered.

Meet Mitsy

Mitsy lost her mom at an early age and a volunteer bottle fed her and her siblings to save their lives. Mitsy was born mid July. She is all kitten, loving life. She loves to play with her toys. She is gentle when being picked up and carried around. She has white hair on the tips of her ears and a cute little nose. She would love to be adopted with one of her siblings but would be fine by herself. Mitsy's adoption fee to help pay for her medical is $100.

Mitsy has been dewormed, microchipped, vaccinated, and tested for Feline Leukemia (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). She has not yet been spayed, therefore there is a separate contract to guarantee she gets spayed. A separate refundable $50 is required for this contract. Since she is not yet spayed, Mitsy is not available for adoption outside of the counties contiguous to Bedford County.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does BHS ask for an approved application before a meet and greet?

BHS is a foster-based facility, which means our fosters work really hard at their day jobs, then come home and take care of their foster animal(s). We don’t want our fosters to take time away from their already busy schedules if an applicant wouldn’t be approved to adopt with us, or is not really serious about adopting. Our application does not mean you must adopt the animal you are interested in. The application simply tells us you are seriously looking for your next forever pet and that you would be approved to adopt from us.

Okay I filled out my application now what?
