One of our volunteers is learning about vet med while she is also in school. She is using a Refractometer to measure the specific gravity of a pet's urine. The specific gravity tells us how well the kidneys are concentrating a pet's urine to ensure they are working properly.

Who Actually Started Ugliest Dog Day and Why
Did you know that there's an annual ugly dog contest held in Petaluma, California every year? It has been there since the 1970s!

Initially, there was a pet parade held in the city. Then started the Ugliest Dog contest which became really popular in the crowd. In fact, it was so popular that it became part of the Sonoma-Marin Fair. It was actually trademarked as 'World's Ugliest Dog®' in 2009. All dog lovers assemble because it's Ugliest Dog Day! Did you know the concept of "ugly" in dogs is entirely human-made?

Today, let's celebrate what makes our pups special on Ugliest Dog Day!

It is celebrated on June 20 every year so get ready for some serious cuteness overload (with maybe a side of funny faces). Show us your ugly dog pictures in the comments!

Calling all ORANGE cat lovers. Post your pictures in the comments of your orange cats in honor of
We celebrate National Garfield the Cat Day on June 19th, to honor the sassy cartoon character, Garfield, and get transported into a world where lasagna reigns supreme, Mondays are not obligatory, and naps are a priority.

Created by Jim Davis, this adorable tabby cat is not only sarcastic but is extremely smart and has opinions on everything from world politics to his fixation with lasagna.

This day is dedicated to celebrating the smartest feline and the entertainment he brings us, as Garfield's endearing personality has managed to charm individuals of all ages all over the globe. Garfield was shown as a grown cat when the strip first appeared on June 19, 1978. This implies that the birthday is more about celebrating the comic strip itself and its beloved character, Garfield.

Take Your Cat to Work Day is here on June 17 which means that it is the perfect opportunity to carry your furry little friend to your workplace and let them receive some extra love and attention from your co-workers.

Who Started Taking Your Cat to Work Day
We can thank Pet Sitters International (PSI) for creating this special day for all cat parents. While Take Your Dog To Work Day has been around since 1999, National Take Your Cat to Work Day arrived on the scene a bit later in 2005.

Studies have shown that the faces of cats release more oxytocin in the brain which makes us more joyful and trusting.
Did you know there is a special meaning behind a cat's headbutt? It is their way to mark you with their scent and claim you as one of their own!
Petting a cat helps to release more serotonin and dopamine, the feel-good hormones.
Some research suggests that a cat's purr has healing properties due to its frequency. It is related to tissue regeneration.
It is not just the size of cats which is small but also their visual range. Cats can clearly see objects that are within a radius of 20 inches, everything beyond that is nothing but a blurry distant object for them.

Did you know a dog's sense of smell is up to 100,000 times more sensitive than ours? 🐶

Their noses are packed with scent receptors that help them track, detect, and even identify health issues in humans. It's no wonder dogs are used in everything from search-and-rescue to medical detection.

Let's keep those super sniffers healthy with regular checkups!
